BARCELONA, Spain, August 4. INSTEAD of his usual frantic pace, that leaves no doubt about who will win the men’s 1500-meter freestyle, it was almost like world-record holder Sun Yang wanted to close out his incredible meet with some drama at the FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n
Sun seemed to be just fine hanging on now three-time runner-up Ryan Cochrane’s hip through the 1400-meter mark, allowing Cochrane to lead throughout and getting the swimming community’s hopes up for an emotional upset from the likeable Cochrane. Sun, however, turned on his patented afterburners in the last 100 meters reminding the world that it’s going to take a lot more than being even at the 1400 mark to beat Sun. Sun closed out his 14:41.15 triumphant time with sizzling 27.37 and 27.11 splits in the final 100 meters to close the door on any potential upset.<\/p>\n
With the win, Sun now joins Grant Hackett as the only males to have ever pulled off the 400-800-1500 freestyle world title sweep this week. That club holds four members for both genders as Katie Ledecky also pulled off the feat this week to match Hannah Stockbauer on the women’s side. Sun now holds five career long course world titles, along with a silver and three bronzes. <\/p>\n
Cochrane, meanwhile, settled for silver for the third straight meet with a 14:42.48. That’s his fourth silver in world championship competition with a silver in the 800 free in 2011 as well. He also took second to Sun at the 2012 London Olympics in this event. <\/p>\n

Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri won the battle for third-place honors pretty handily with a 14:45.37, while USA’s Connor Jaeger (14:47.96) and Michael McBroom (14:53.95) finished fifth and sixth in the metric mile.<\/p>\n
