Efimova swam a 2:20.17, not far off her 2:19.41 best time. Efimova won titles in 2013 and 2017 as Hungary&#8217;s<strong> Agnes Kovacs<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Leisel Jones<\/strong> each have two titles.<\/p>\n<p>Efimova was quicker to win the World title in Budapest two years ago, winning that race at 2:19.64.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/vplayer.nbcsports.com\/p\/BxmELC\/nbcsports_embed\/select\/media\/i5clu8GD7UsD\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">Your browser does not support iframes.<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This race was expected to be a duel between Efimova and 100 breast champion <strong>Lilly King<\/strong>, but the latter was disqualified in the heats for a non-simultaneous turn. King was initially the second seed out of the preliminaries but lost her chance to win her first medal in the 200 breast on the world level. USA Swimming lodged a formal protest for the disqualification but the DQ was solidified by a jury of appeal.<\/p>\n<p>King was a popular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-fina-world-championships-predictions-can-lilly-king-take-down-yulia-efimova-in-200-breast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gold medal selection<\/a>\u00a0in the 200 breast as she was looking to become the first man or woman to win the 50, 100 and 200 of any stroke at the same World Championships. She already won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lilly-king-fights-off-yulia-efimova-surge-to-retain-100m-breaststroke-title-russian-moves-level-with-jones-medal-haul-race-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 breast<\/a> on Tuesday night in Korea for her second World title in the event. She was fourth in Budapest two years ago in the 200 breast and has the third fastest time in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, Efimova took care of a King-less final and won her third gold medal in the 200 breaststroke. Efimova now stands alone with the most gold medals in this event. This will only add fuel to the fire next year in Tokyo if Efimova and King can meet again in the 200 breaststroke, facing stout competition in their home countries. Coming into the meet, the top two times in the world belonged to USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Annie Lazor\u00a0<\/strong>(2:20.77) and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgeniia Chikunova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:21.07) and neither of them were here.<\/p>\n<p>King&#8217;s disqualification in the heats, leaving Efimova to swim in the final without her chief rival, was eerily similar to 2007 when\u00a0<strong>Brendan Hansen\u00a0<\/strong>pulled out of prelims in the 200 breast and left <strong>Kosuke Kitajima\u00a0<\/strong>to win the Worlds final without his biggest rival.<\/p>\n<p>Efimova has been known to lay back on the front end of the race, similar to fellow Russian\u00a0<strong>Anton Chupkov<\/strong>, who set the 200 breast world record tonight. But Efimova turned in the lead at the halfway point so that meant it was doomsday for the rest of the seven swimmers. She split a 35.34 on her third 50, which was 0.90 faster than next fastest <strong>Sydney Pickrem\u00a0<\/strong>(36.24).<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has never won a medal at the World Championships in a women&#8217;s event but that changed Friday night with\u00a0<strong>Tatjana Schoenmaker\u00a0<\/strong>coming through with a 2:22.52 for the silver medal. Schoenmaker was quicker in the semifinals as her 2:21.79 in the semifinals will stand as the African record.<\/p>\n<p>Canada hasn&#8217;t won a medal in this event since\u00a0<strong>Martha McCabe<\/strong> won bronze in 2011 and that also changed tonight with <strong>Sydney Pickrem\u00a0<\/strong>winning the bronze at 2:22.90.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ye Shiwen\u00a0<\/strong>and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Molly Renshaw\u00a0<\/strong>were within striking distance of the medals, but ultimately fell short. Ye was fourth at 2:23.15 while Renshaw was fifth at 2:23.78.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Wog\u00a0<\/strong>(2:25.14), Belgium&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fanny Lecluyse\u00a0<\/strong>(2:25.23) and South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kaylene Corbett\u00a0<\/strong>(2:26.62) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n<table class=\"finals competition-detailed-results
