PHOENIX, Arizona, August 5. IT has been an extremely busy week in the Swimming World. As most of you are aware this past week was the biggest meet of the post-Olympic year, the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Swimming World was at the event providing live coverage. We noticed that it was the ladies who showed up to break some world records. Female Swimmer of the Meet Katie Ledecky went 3 for 3 golds setting two world records in the 800 and 1500 freestyle events. Coincidently, all 3 breaststroke world records were broken in the semi-finals. Ruta Meilutyte lowered the fastest time in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke and Rikke Moller Pedersen broke Rebecca Soni’s world record in the 200. No world records set on the men’s side but Sun Yang of China was the Male Swimmer of the Meet with 3 golds in the distance freestyle events. In USA swimming news, the US Open concluded on Saturday in Irvine, California. This meet was a big opportunity for those swimmers who did not make the World Championship team. Highlights included top ten performances in the world from Gillian Ryan in the 800 freestyle, Ryan Murphy in the 200 backstroke, Justine Bowker in the 200 IM and Sebastian Rousseau in the 400 IM. Tom Shields put together a solid 100 butterfly that not only placed him fourth in the world with a meet record but would have won the 100 fly at Nationals and placed him on the Barcelona World Championship Team. Remembering back, he placed 5th in the event in Indianapolis. Tough break.<\/p>\n
In younger news, the Speedo Far Western Championships were held in northern California. Swimming World was also in attendance streaming the final sessions live on SwimmingWorld.TV. In upcoming news, the fast swimming is not over. The Speedo Junior National Championships started today in Irvine, California. Becca Mann does not want to end her season with the World Championships. She is entered in a variety of events. There is a good chance we will see some national age group records go down over the course of the 5 day meet.<\/p>\n
California is a busy state. The US Masters Summer Nationals are set to begin August 7th in Mission Viejo. The World Cup series is also ready to kick off with the first stop in Eindhoven followed by Berlin. This is an 8-stop meet that will run through November.
