We start today’s news off with a tragedy from the Masters National meet in Mission Viejo, California. The meet kicked off Wednesday with the distance freestyle events. 65 year old Louis Slater passed away after being rushed to the hospital following complications during his 1500 freestyle. USMS has released that Slater suffered a cardiac arrest while swimming. Slater is a member of the Fig Garden Swim Team from Fresno, California. In World news, Katina Hosszu’s wallet is getting thicker. The 24 year old Hungarian collected another $10,000 world record check during prelims of the 100 IM. She just missed out on another in the final heat of the 400 IM. Hosszu was under world record pace by 2 seconds at the hundred but ended up falling short by just over a second. However, her swim of 4:22.1 was a world circuit record.<\/p>\n

In younger news, the USA Swimming Junior Nationals are picking up speed. Yesterday’s final session included two meet records from Townley Haas in the 400 freestyle and Justin Lynch in the 100 butterfly. Today’s events include the 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Finals begin at 6 PM Pacific time. <\/p>\n
Lastly, an Estonian coach has been banned for life after spiking his athlete’s drink with anabolic steroids. Coach Nikolai Borzov has been accused of giving swimmer Anita Stepanenko a drink containing stanozolol without her notification.
