{"id":382819,"date":"2019-07-24T03:23:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T10:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=382819"},"modified":"2019-07-24T15:27:21","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T22:27:21","slug":"health-warning-issued-after-number-of-diarrhoea-cases-reported-at-world-swimming-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/health-warning-issued-after-number-of-diarrhoea-cases-reported-at-world-swimming-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Warning Issued After &#8216;Number of\u00a0Diarrhoea Cases&#8217; Reported At World Swimming Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Teams at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju<\/strong> have been urged to observe good hygiene standards after reports of a number of\u00a0diarrhoea cases.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>FINA Sports Medicine Committee<\/strong> statement to teams does not make clear whether the source of the outbreak is linked to any specific place, such as the Athletes&#8217; Village or sports venues.<\/p>\n<p>There is no suggestion that the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-withdraws-from-200-freestyle-due-to-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> illnesses of <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> and <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong><\/a> are linked to the caution.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from <strong>USA Swimming<\/strong> announcing Ledecky&#8217;s withdrawal from action through illness two days ago noted that the freestyle superstar had arrived in Gwangju on July 17 feeling under the weather. F<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ariarne-titmus-takes-katie-ledeckys-crown-with-thunder-from-down-under-finish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our days later, she lost the 400m freestyle to Australian <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong><\/a> after suffering an uncharacteristic collapse of form on the last length of the race.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to recover in time for the 800m and 4x200m freestyle, Ledecky withdrew from the 200m freestyle and then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-forced-out-of-1500m-free-final-and-200m-heats-by-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1500m freestyle final<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u00a0FINA Sports Medicine Committee statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Cases of diarrhoea have been reported during the past three days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We take this opportunity to remind all teams of the need to observe good hygiene practices in the prevention of any infectious disease.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Regular hand washing, use of bottled water and the early notification of any significant health problems must be encouraged.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Please report to the Village Medical Centre if you have any concerns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>FINA Sports Medicine Committee.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teams at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju have been urged to observe good hygiene standards after reports of a number of\u00a0diarrhoea cases.
