Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Danas Rapsys<\/strong>, who originally touched first at 1:44.69 was disqualified for a false start. The DQ became official immediately after the race for movement on the blocks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FHf9mpGI06Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The large contingent of fans from China on the lane 8 side of the pool screamed and shouted in delight when the official results were flashed on the scoreboard, with the rest of the pool jeering and booing the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Sun has been the talk of the venue in Gwangju this week after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-asks-cas-to-hold-public-hearing-into-dispute-with-anti-doping-testers-in-september\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">controversial past<\/a> with doping. The controversy came to a forefront when Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-issues-warning-to-swimming-australia-over-mack-hortons-silent-protest-on-sun-yang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lodged a silent protest<\/a> in the medal ceremony of the 400 free on Sunday night, much to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mack-horton-greeted-with-applause-of-athletes-from-around-the-world-shows-great-moral-fibre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">delight of majority of the athletes competing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Had Rapsys&#8217; win counted, it would have been the first medal of his career at the World Championships. He would have moved up to eighth all-time.<\/p>\n<p>This is Sun&#8217;s third straight medal in this event at the World Championships and he also defends his gold from 2017. He Joins <strong>Michael Phelps <\/strong>(2005, 2007), <strong>Ian Thorpe <\/strong>(2001, 2003) and <strong>Michael Gross\u00a0<\/strong>(1982, 1986) as repeat winners at Worlds. He also joins Thorpe as winners of the 200 &amp; 400 free in back-to-back World Championships.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"m_1029023437151482449gmail-m_7155257579640848971p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span class=\"m_1029023437151482449gmail-m_7155257579640848971s1\">&#8220;My victory was because of my hard work,&#8221; Sun said after the race. &#8220;I continued to keep fighting, I didn\u2019t give up when I was in second place.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":1wj\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":un\" class=\"a3s aXjCH \">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"m_1029023437151482449gmail-m_7155257579640848971p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span class=\"m_1029023437151482449gmail-m_7155257579640848971s1\">&#8220;I was the only one to enter the 800 this morning, so I was very tired. I just slept for an hour and a half this afternoon.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The silver medal went to Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katsuhiro Matsumoto\u00a0<\/strong>at 1:45.22. It was his first individual medal in his career and the first one for Japan at the World Championships. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Martin Malyutin\u00a0<\/strong>and Great Britian&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>each picked up the bronze medal at 1:45.63. It is the first medal for either swimmer at the World Championships in an individual event.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>&#8220;I guess I\u2019ve sort of got to celebrate off someone else\u2019s misfortune,&#8221; Scott said after the race. &#8220;I\u2019d liked to have done it outright but it\u2019s my first ever individual worlds medal so I have got to be happy with that and try and move things on in the rest of the week because I\u2019ve still got more events to come.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>&#8220;To be perfectly honest I\u2019ve definitely got more in there time wise. I have done a lot of 1:45s and I\u2019ve swum them a lot of different ways as well. Learning but then I\u2019m just disappointed I wasn\u2019t able to go in there and get a best time. It\u2019s two years now and I\u2019ve not really moved it on timewise. It\u2019s good that I am now consistent and I have been consistently dropping 1:45s at major meets which is good but it\u2019s now trying to move that on as well.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Early leader\u00a0<strong>Clyde Lewis\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia finished in sixth at 1:45.78. He was leading the race through 150 meters but fell off big time on the final lap. medalists, shaking hands with Malyutin and Matsumoto, but refusing to make eye contact with Sun. Scott then took a photo with his medal alone but not with the other three medalists. He walked off after the ceremony was over and waved at the crowd.
