NEW YORK CITY, New York, August 20. ONE of the responsibilities that comes with being a professional athlete is fulfilling sponsor obligations. Normally, an athlete would participate in a photo shoot or make a brief appearance to promote the brand that’s paying them a large sum of money. But that’s not how Ryan Lochte does things.<\/p>\n
After a weekend of celebrating his 29th birthday in Las Vegas, Lochte traveled to New York to help promote the snack food Combos, which are pretzel- or cracker-flavored tubes filled with cheese and produced by the megacompany Mars, Inc. Always thinking outside the box, Lochte agreed to the company’s suggestion that he swim about 100 yards in the Hudson River, to make what was billed as “the world’s most epic pizza delivery.” Lochte swam from a boat in the Hudson to the shore carrying a backpack filled with bags of pizza-flavored Combos snacks.<\/p>\n
The Hudson River is one of the waterways featured in the annual Manhattan Island swim, so many people brave the somewhat chilly temperatures each year, often hovering in the low to mid-60s. When Lochte emerged from the water, he handed out packages of the snack to cheering fans.<\/p>\n
