Day Three Heats (Men’s 800 Free)<\/em><\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>is on top of a very tight 800 free field heading into tomorrow’s final with a 7:45.70 heat swim. He was in control throughout the second half of his heat swim as the Italian shut it down on the final 50 to conserve energy for tomorrow’s final. He won the bronze in 2017 and the silver in 2015 in this event as he is searching for his first gold. Paltrinieri is the two-time reigning World Champion in the 1500 free and also finished sixth in the 10K earlier in the World Championships.<\/p>\n

The 800 free final will not be swum until day four finals on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

He is ahead of France’s\u00a0David Aubry\u00a0<\/strong>(7:46.37) and Australia’s\u00a0Jack McLoughlin\u00a0<\/strong>(7:46.42) as the top eight from this morning’s heats were separated by less than three seconds. The final will be a race of tactics and whoever swims the best strategy will come out on top.<\/p>\n

\n

“It was a good race, good heat swim so I am happy,” McLoughlin said. “In the final, lane three, it will be a good race tomorrow night. The 800 is very, very fast so I think tomorrow night is really going to step up again and hopefully I\u2019ll be in the mix there. I think there are a lot of really good, class, quality swimmers that missed out there so it will be a good one.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Reigning World Champion\u00a0Gabriele Detti\u00a0<\/strong>of Italy placed fourth in the heats at 7:46.46 as he is aiming to defend his gold from 2017.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s\u00a0Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong>, who had the fastest time in the world in 2018, is seeded sixth for the final. He looked particularly easy in the second half of his swim and is looking dangerous to win his first World Championships gold. He will be joined in the final by fellow Ukrainian\u00a0Sergii Frolov\u00a0<\/strong>(7:47.25).<\/p>\n

China’s\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>, who won this event three times from 2011-2015, snuck into the final in eighth place at 7:48.12. He hasn’t been particularly sharp the last few years in the 800 free, but he has a lane tomorrow for the final so he shouldn’t be counted out.<\/p>\n

Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen\u00a0<\/strong>(7:46.53) also qualified for the final in fifth place. He has yet to win a medal on the world level, despite swimming in many finals in his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

USA’s\u00a0Zane Grothe<\/strong> (7:50.14) and Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong> (7:53.11) notably did not make the final after Grothe was 11th and Wilimovsky was 16th.<\/p>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Mack Horton <\/strong>(7:52.65), who has been extremely vocal about Sun Yang<\/a> this week, did not make the final either, placing 14th.<\/p>\n

“It was nine seconds better than trials so I think I am pretty happy with that,” Horton said. “Realistically I haven\u2019t done that much work for the 800. Yeah. I\u2019ve done more 400 and 200 work and 800 is more of a by-product.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Horton lodged a silent protest during the medal ceremony of the 400 free when he refused to stand on the podium. FINA issued Horton a strong warning<\/a> for these actions. Horton seemed unfazed by these actions, saying the focus is now on the Australia team’s performances through the end of the meet.<\/p>\n

Another notable miss in the 800 came from Germany’s\u00a0Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>, who was the 10K World Champion<\/a> last week.\u00a0 He was a potential medal favorite in this event and will also have a chance in the 1500 at the end of the meet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
