PHOENIX, Arizona, August 21. FINA released today some official numbers from the world championships recently held in Barcelona, Spain, and they include zero positive drug tests from the 462 urine and blood samples taken at the meet. Also of interest is the 280,000 spectators who watched all or some of the action in the six sports disciplines contested in those two weeks. The estimated number of spectators at the London Olympics was 500,000, and that was across more than 30 sport disciplines, so by those numbers, the aquatics world championships was a big success. The Palau Sant Jordi, where the swimming competition took place, was sold out for three of the eight days, with the other five days approaching the arena’s capacity of 12,000.<\/p>\n
We are exactly one year away from the 2014 Pan Pacific championships, which will take place on the Gold Coast of Australia, the first time the meet has been held Down Under since 1999. A new aquatic center is under construction in the city of Southport, where Olympic and world championship team member Chris Wright trains and just down the road from Brisbane, where world champions Christian Sprenger and Cate Campbell live. The Pan Pacific championships was created as an answer to the European championships, and pretty much every country not in Europe is invited to swim there. The United States, Australia, Canada and Japan are the four charter nations, and they always send fully-stocked squads to the meet.
