Day 3 Heats (Men’s 50 Breast)<\/em><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong>, fresh off a world record in the 100 breast semifinals from Sunday night, swam the fastest 50 breast time in the heats on Tuesday morning in Gwangju. Peaty swam a 26.28 to lead the semifinalists into tonight as he is ahead of the Brazilian duo of\u00a0Joao Gomes\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Felipe Lima<\/strong>. Those countrymen tied for second at 26.73.<\/p>\n

Coming into the meet, Gomes and Lima showed signs of challenging<\/a> Peaty by the time the final rolls around. But after Peaty’s otherworldly 56.88 on Sunday, he is looking to be a slam dunk to win the gold medal tomorrow night. But these World Championships have already seen\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>stand in the silver medal position on the podium, so anything is possible.<\/p>\n

Turkey’s\u00a0Huseyin Sakci\u00a0<\/strong>(26.87) is tied for fourth with Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>, who was 12th in the 100 after coming in as a medal favorite. There was yet another tie for sixth place with Russia’s Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>(26.93) and China’s\u00a0Yan Zibei<\/strong>, who broke the Asian Record in the process. Yan won the bronze medal in the 100 breast behind Peaty and fellow Brit James Wilby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ireland’s\u00a0Darragh Greene\u00a0<\/strong>(26.94) and Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>(26.99) also broke 27 seconds in the heats. USA’s\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>(27.02) advanced to the semifinals in 11th place while the other American Andrew Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>scratched to presumably focus on the 200 breast later in the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
