PHOENIX, Arizona, August 27. THE first day of the junior world swimming championships was great, but the second day was even better in Dubai. Ruta Meilutyte got close to her world record of 29.48 in the 50 breast finals with a 29.86, then returned later to post the second-fastest time in the 100 free semifinals, with her 55.16 actually tying with American Cierra Runge.<\/p>\n
Mack Horton looks like he’ll be taking a lot of gold medals back to Australia by the end of the meet. In addition to winning the 400 freestyle and the 400 free relay last night, Horton won the 200 free today with a quick 1:47.55. Horton’s best events are yet to come, with the 800 free tomorrow and 1500 on Saturday, not to mention the 800 free relay on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Another great race today was the boys 200 IM, which featured four swimmers under 2:00. Gunnar Bentz got to the wall first with a 1:59.44 for his first time under the barrier. Russia’s Semen Makovich was second with a 1:59.50, and Japan’s Keita Sunama was third with a 1:59.74. Andrew Seliskar swam a 1:59.91 to lead qualifiers in prelims this morning, and though he was faster tonight with a 1:59.84, it was only good for fourth place … and a new 15-16-year-old national age group record.<\/p>\n
The United States picked up another gold medal today when Katie McLaughlin raced to the wall to win the 200 butterfly. Hungary’s Liliana Szilagyi was leading for 185 meters before she ran out of gas and settled for second. Becca Mann was fifth in the 200 fly and about 90 minutes later was second in the 800 free behind Australia’s Alanna Bowles.<\/p>\n

Late yesterday Swimming World got the news that a new postgrad team is taking shape in North Carolina, as Charlie Houchin’s IX3 team is relocating to the Raleigh area, and joining him in the pool there will be Chloe Sutton and Ashley Twichell. Both of them have been training for many years with the Mission Viejo Nadadores in California. More swimmers are likely to be joining the squad as things get settled in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
