RALEIGH, North Carolina, September 3. THE Raleigh Swimming Association (RSA) announced today that on top of purchasing and restoring he Candler Swim Club location in Raleigh, it will also name the new complex after N.C. State legend William H. Sonner.<\/p>\n
Sonner is a Hall of Famer as honored by North Carolina Swimming, and was an All-American at N.C. State. He also founded RSA and served as its first head coach for 10 years. <\/p>\n
“This is truly a special day for the entire RSA community and the commitment made today will pave the way to unprecedented success for RSA in the future,” Sonner said. “My family and I are humbled to be recognized with this tremendous honor in the naming of the Aquatic Facility. However, the true winners today are the kids who will continue to learn life lessons of teamwork, discipline and a commitment to excellence through the RSA coaches and community. I will forever remain most grateful that the life lessons on which RSA was founded over 50 years ago will have a solid foundation on which to thrive in the future.”<\/p>\n
RSA has been in place in Raleigh since 1960, and is one of the longest-standing clubs in the nation. <\/p>\n
“Purchasing this property and owning our own pool and training facility, ensures the future of RSA for the next 53 years,” RSA Board President Craig Reist said. “Purchasing and renovating the former Candler Swim Club has required a major commitment from our membership. We (RSA’s membership) believe in RSA’s mission and have been fundraising via garage sales, swimmer run lemonade stands, commemorative pool tile sales; in addition to securing sponsors and donors to raise the funds necessary to make this dream come true.” <\/p>\n
The overall cost of the planned project is estimated at $1.8 million and will renovate a nearly two-acre site. The project is planned to be complete by Nov. 2013.<\/p>\n
