Day Three has matched the outside’s temperature and brought the heat in today’s races at the 2019 Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis. The McHugh brothers stole the spectators hearts again and went 1-2 in the Mens 200 Breaststroke. University of Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell<\/strong> won both the 200m Backstroke and 100 Butterfly tonight, which gave some serious points to her team. University of Texas in Austin Commit Peter Larson<\/strong> showcased his talent to take on his second backstroke win of the weekend. Wisconsin Aquatics, Fox Valley Swim Team, and Elmbrook Swim Club continue to be in the lead.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200m Backstroke<\/b><\/h3>\n

Last night\u2019s<\/a> 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle runner up, Tevyn Waddell<\/strong>, showed up today extra ready to win today and not take second for an answer. Waddell, of University of Minnesota, destroyed the field by four seconds to win the event at a 2:10.78. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wisconin Aquatics Margaret Guanci<\/strong> touched at a 2:15.08 to take second. Less than a second behind Guanci was Jamie Kolar<\/strong>, who clocked in at 2:15.85 to take the bronze. In fourth place was Kaylyn Schoof<\/strong> (2:16.91), followed by Margaret Wanezek<\/strong> (2:17.16),and Hannah Lindsey<\/strong> (2:19.63). Kelly Leonard<\/strong> (2:21.02), and then Katelyn Blattner<\/strong> (2:24.67) finished seventh and eighth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Men’s 200m Backstroke<\/b><\/h3>\n
Peter Larson, <\/strong>a<\/span> University of Texas at Austin commit is on a roll and won the 200m backstroke this evening after winning the 100m on Friday. Not only did Larson win, he also qualified for the Olympic trials with his time of 2:02.07 tonight. 15 year-old Griffin O\u2019Leary<\/strong> took second with a 2:05.59, and untouched 21 year-old Michael Tegeler<\/strong> at 2:05.98.<\/p>\n
University of Minnesota\u2019s Nicholas Saulnier<\/strong> (2:07.11) placed fourth. Fifth through seventh came down to the touch, as they were all within four tenths of each other. Drew Harris<\/strong> touched first (2:08.32), followed by Jared Simpson<\/strong> (2:08.61), and Patrick Gridley<\/strong> (2:08.78). Collin Schuster<\/strong> rounded out the A final at 2:09.69.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women’s 400m Freestyle<\/b><\/h3>\n
Rachel Stege<\/strong> swam the 400 Freestyle in Katie Ledecky<\/strong> style, beating the competitors by body lengths. Also the clear winner of the 800 freestyle on Thursday, Rachel Stege of Fox Valley Swim Team won the 400 Freestyle at an Olympic Trial Cut time at 4:13.36.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Katherine Sullivan<\/strong> (4:19.36) and Madison Waechter<\/strong> (4:20.71) completed the top three. Abbey Erwin<\/strong> took home fourth at 4:20.85, and Magdalena Emary<\/strong> took fifth at 4:25.04. In sixth was Katherine Randall<\/strong> (4:25.26) followed by Alivia Lindorfer<\/strong> (4:29.23) and Schuyler Dupont<\/strong> (4:29.24).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Men\u2019s 400m Free was a race to the finish. Cameron Kelley<\/strong> and Ryan Netzel<\/strong> battled the entire race, but in the end Cameron Kelley touched first at a 3:57.12. Only 2 tenths behind touched Ryan Netzel, with Robert Niemann<\/strong> being the next closest touch at 4:01.83. <\/span><\/p>\n
Jacob Harlan<\/strong> (4:03.62) and Graham Miotke<\/strong> (4:03.75) swam up another great show, as Harlan came out ahead. Ean Vandergraaf<\/strong> (4:05.08), Eric Geunes<\/strong> (4:05.96), and Maxwell Lezer<\/strong> (4:08.11) close out the top eight for men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women’s 100m Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
Swimming in ones home pool can give a swimmer a little advantage, and Lindsey Kozelsky<\/strong> embraced the advantage and swam with it here at the Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis. University of Minnesota’s very own, Lindsey Kozelsky<\/strong> (1:09.52) won the event by a second over the field.<\/span><\/p>\n
Lucy Thomas<\/strong> of Elmbrook Aquatics (1:10.35) and Avalon Schultz<\/strong> of Wisconsin Aquatics (1:10.65) touched second and third respectively. Vanessa Hermann<\/strong> (1:11.28), Jenna Silvestri<\/strong> (1:11.77), and Lily Borgenheimer<\/strong> (1:11.85) all earned 1:11\u2019s to take fourth through sixth. In seventh and eighth were Jordyn Wentzel<\/strong> (1:12.23), and Emma Lezer<\/strong> (1:13.80).<\/span><\/p>\n
Men’s 100m Breaststroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n
We are back at it again with the McHugh brothers taking 1-2 in a breaststroke event! But this time around, Connor McHugh<\/strong> (1:01.82)\u00a0 out touched his younger brother and 200 Breaststroke winner of the meet, Maxwell McHugh<\/strong> (1:01.97) by one tenth of a second. Both McHugh brothers qualified for the Olympic trials with their respective times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Mitchell Hovis<\/strong> of Wyoming took third at 1:02.84, and also qualified for the Olympic trials. Fourth place was Hayden Zheng<\/strong> (1:03.37) and fifth place was Garrett Clasen<\/strong> (1:03.74), who both were close to the trials cut of 1:03.29, but just missed it. Weston Credit<\/strong> (1:04.42), Caleb Aman<\/strong> (1:04.49), and Aedan Lewis<\/strong> (1:05.31) completed the top eight of this exciting race.<\/span><\/p>\n
Women’s 100m Butterfly<\/b><\/h3>\n
Tevyn Waddell<\/strong> of The University of Minnesota wins her second event in the of the night in the 100 Butterfly, just shortly after her win in the 200 backstroke earlier in the evening. Waddell won with a 1:00.01, and Reily Tiltmann<\/strong> came in second with a 1:00.35. Scarlet Martin<\/strong> clocked in at a 1:00.97, with the 200 Freestyle winner Hannah Burvill<\/strong> trailing close behind her at 1:01.06. St. Charles Swim Team\u2019s Mallory Jump<\/strong> (1:01.12) took the sweet fifth spot, followed by Kelsey Drake<\/strong> (1:01.34), Ruby Marti<\/strong>n (1:01.52), and Mckenna Stone<\/strong> (1:02.10).<\/span><\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 100m Butterfly<\/b><\/h3>\n
University of Minnesota\u2019s Matthew Thomas<\/strong> (54.59) out touched Wisconsin Aquatics Frank Niziolek<\/strong> (54.69) by a tenth of a second to take the gold in the Men\u2019s 100m Butterfly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Third place went to West\u2019s Jeffrey Vitek<\/strong> at 54.85, and fourth place went to Wisconsin Aquatics Kevin Bruan<\/strong> at 55.09. Michael Linnihan<\/strong> clocked in at 55.19, followed by Kaiser Neverman<\/strong> (55.67) and Tyler Klatt<\/strong> (56.38). Phillip Musser<\/strong> rounded up the top 8 with a 56.59.<\/span><\/p>\n
Women’s 800m Freestyle Relay<\/h3>\n
Wisconsin Aquatics<\/strong> showed complete dominance in the event, and crushed the field by over 4 seconds at 8:23.82. The Fox Valley Swim Team<\/strong> still brought the heat with a time of 3:28.33 to touch second, and out touched the Elmbrook B Relay<\/strong> at 8:28.74. The A Relay of Barrington<\/strong> finished next with a 3:39.43, and was followed by Mako Aquatics<\/strong> (8:31.93), Edina Swim Club<\/strong> (8:33.70), Riptide<\/strong> (3:34.18), and Barrington’s<\/strong> B relay (8:37.87).<\/p>\n

The Men’s 800m Freestyle relay had an identical result of the Women 800m Free Telay results with the top three teams. Wisconsin Aquatics<\/strong> proved their depth to take the win at 7:39.17. Fox Valley Swim team<\/strong> finished strong to take second at 3:47.95. In third was the Elmbrook Swim Club<\/strong> at 7:51.49. Illinois Club’s West Swim Club<\/strong> (7:53.70), and St. Charles Swim Team<\/strong> (7:54.28) took on fourth and fifth. Ywca Flying Fish<\/strong> (8:00.87) finished next, followed by Hinsdale Swim Club<\/strong> (8:01.57), and Barrington Swim Club<\/strong> (8:03.18).<\/p>\n

The 2019 Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis will continue tomorrow at prelims at promptly at 9 a.m. CT and finals that will begin at 6 p.m. The events will include the 200 Individual Medley, 50 Freestyle, the 1500 Freestyle, and the 400 Medley Relay.<\/p>\n
