PHOENIX, Arizona, September 10. THE Chinese National Games is showing us some very fast swimming in Shenyang, with Asian and national records falling nearly every day so far. The swim that got us the most excited for the future was Sun Yang’s 200 freestyle on Friday. Sun did not swim the 200 freestyle at the world championships, opting out of it to lighten his workload. But his 1:44.47 at the Chinese national games shows us that Sun could have been a serious medal contender in Barcelona. The time would have placed second at the world championships, two tenths behind winner Yannick Agnel, and broke Tae Hwan Park’s Asian record of 1:44.80 from 2010.<\/p>\n
Sun has been making big strides in the 200 freestyle. He tied with Tae Hwan Park for the silver medal in London and with this week’s swim is looking good for a run at gold in the event at the Rio Olympics. No one has ever won the 200, 400 and 1500 freestyles at the same Olympic Games, and Sun Yang looks to make that bit of history his own.<\/p>\n
