Rodgers Recovering From Heart Op With Eye On Aussie Charges In Gwangju"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Story and main photo courtesy of <strong>Ian Hanson\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Legendary Australian swim coach <strong>John \u201cJR\u201d Rodgers<\/strong> will watch tomorrow\u2019s <strong>Open Water Swimming World Championships in Gwangju<\/strong>, Korea from the confines of his hospital bed on Queensland\u2019s Sunshine Coast &#8211; lucky to be alive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2019-fina-world-aquatics-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Full Meet coverage of the World Championships can be found on Our Championships Page<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 81-year-old Noosa-based Olympic Team coach is on track to make a full recovery after undergoing major open heart surgery following the discovery of a 10cm tear in his aorta.<\/p>\n<p>Rodgers business partner, fellow coach and former pupil, dual Olympian <strong>Graeme Brewer<\/strong> revealed today the man so affectionately know around the coaching world as \u201cJR\u201d will be released from hospital next week and will fight to coach another day.<\/p>\n<p>The man who has guided some of Australia\u2019s finest internationals to great heights at Olympics and World Championships over a celebrated coaching career suffered a serious heart episode while swimming at Noosa Aquatic Centre three weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Rodgers, who is regarded as one of the fittest men for his age, scrambled to the side of the pool after swimming 400m, alerted lifeguards, before showering and driving himself to Noosa Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Once assessed he was transported to Kawana University Hospital for immediate testing , where doctors discovered the tear to the aorta.<\/p>\n<p>Following open heart surgery, Rodgers spent four days in an induced coma, his family and friends by his side, praying that JR would pull through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to admit it was touch and go for the old boy but somehow, some way he managed to survive this ordeal\u2026the doctors are amazed really\u2026.it is some what of a miracle,\u201d said Brewer, who has been JR\u2019s right hand man for many years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t his time\u2026but all of us who know JR it probably doesn\u2019t come as any surprise\u2026a case of where there\u2019s a will there\u2019s a way.\u00a0He is already up on the cycle and walking with the aid of a stick \u2013 he\u2019s got a long way to go \u2013 we just have to insist he starts to eat to build himself up again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBut I can tell all the coaches and the swimming community out there that JR will be back on pool deck \u2013 he lives for it and even if they wheel him onto the deck in a wheelchair he will be there that\u2019s for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brewer and Rodgers-coached 2012 English Channel conquerer and 2009 World Open Water 25km silver medallist Trent Grimsey, have been among the few guests who have been to visit him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_107041\" style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107041\" data-attachment-id=\"107041\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/legendary-swim-coach-john-jr-rodgers-recovering-from-heart-op-with-eye-on-aussie-charges-in-gwangju\/ron-mckeon-pan-pacs-2014\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ron-mckeon-pan-pacs-2014.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2403,1600\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Delly Carr&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D4&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1408555926&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;600&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;200&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.000625&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"ron-mckeon-pan-pacs-2014\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Coach Ron McKeon &#8211; Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If Kareena and fellow Dolphin <strong>Chelsea Gubecka<\/strong> finish in the Top Ten they will be the first athletes nominated to the Australian Olympjc Team for next year\u2019s Tokyo 2020 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Then come Tuesday it will be Lee\u2019s Noosa training partner, <strong>Nick Sloman<\/strong>\u2019s turn to race the 10km World Championship race with once again immediate Olympic spots up for grabs in the Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>With Rodgers in hospital it was Brewer who put the finishing touches to Lee and Sloman&#8217;s World&#8217;s preparation with two weeks training at the Sunshine Coast Grammar School Pool, which he said they were all so grateful &#8211;
