GLASGOW, Scotland, September 18. THE European All Star squad is quickly filling up as top stars throughout Europe continue to accept invitations to participate in the USA vs. Europe Duel in the Pool. Shortly after news broke that Glasgow-native Michael Jamieson would be on the team, Swimming World Scandinavian correspondent Rokur Jakupsstovu clued us in that Faroe Islands’ Pal Joensen has also accepted an invitation to participate.<\/p>\n
Joensen, clearly the top swimmer to ever come out of the Faroe Islands, which has just 50,000 citizens, will make a run at the distance freestyle events while in Glasgow in December. <\/p>\n
While Joensen has had some success in the long course events, his best international finish ever occurred in short course swimming as he took silver in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle behind Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri at the 2012 FINA World Short Course Championships last December. He actually finished third, but early winner Mads Glaesner was stripped of his world title in June of this year for a doping violation at Worlds. That’s the first time a Faroese swimmer has ever medaled at a World Championship event in swimming.<\/p>\n
Early on, Joensen did his training in the Faroe Islands, but has since moved to Denmark to be able to continue his training in a long course facility. The Faroe Islands only has 25-meter pools available. Training in Denmark works out though, as his only path to the Olympics is through an affiliation between the Faroes Islands and Denmark where Joensen represents Denmark in Olympic competition. In fact, he made the 2012 London Olympics for Denmark in three events (400 free, 1500 free and 800 free relay).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
