His speed has been even more evident over 50 meters, as Peaty is the only man in history to break 26 seconds over one lap. Peaty is the two-time reigning world champion in the 50 breast as he is aiming for a third straight gold in both the 50 and 100 breast. But Peaty doesn’t sit on the top of the world rankings for 2019.

The Brazilian duo of Felipe Lima and Joao Gomes have both been quicker than Peaty in 2019 with Lima posting the number one time at 26.33 while Gomes is second at 26.42. Lima and Gomes also sit right behind Peaty in the all-time rankings at second and third. Is this the year Peaty loses for the first time at the world level? He finished second at the Commonwealth Games to South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh, who has since retired. Peaty was untouched in the 2017 final, but Gomes and Lima have provided plenty of pressure to the Brit this year.

Gomes was the silver medalist in Budapest two years ago, a little over a half second behind Peaty. Gomes seems to get better with age like fellow Brazilian Nicholas Santos. The 33-year-old, who previously served a doping suspension, is swimming better than ever and that could lead to some positive performances in the pool.

Another name to keep an eye on is Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus. He swam the fastest 100 breast ever by anyone not named Peaty earlier this year and has shown he has plenty of speed. The USA’s Michael Andrew has made it known that he wants to be the fastest man in all four 50s. The 50 breast seems to be his last 50 to conquer but he definitely has the speed and training background to be competitive. Andrew’s season best is a 27.07.

Current Records:

World Record: 25.95, Adam Peaty, GBR – 2017
Championships Record: 25.95, Adam Peaty, GBR – 2017
American Record: 26.76, Kevin Cordes, USA – 2015

2017 World Champion: Adam Peaty, GBR, 25.99
2018 Fastest Time: Adam Peaty, GBR, 26.09 (Europeans)
2019 Fastest Times:

26.33, Felipe Lima, BRA

26.42, Joao Gomes, BRA

26.49, Adam Peaty, GBR

26.55, Ilya Shymanovich, BLR

26.82, Fabio Scozzoli, ITA

26.83, Csaba Szilagyi, HUN

26.85, Nicolo Martinenghi, ITA

26.91, Michael Houlie, RSA

Swimming World’s team of Andy Ross, Dan D’Addona, David Rieder, Diana Pimer and Taylor Covington will be selecting their choices for the medals at World Championships in each event.
