\nPreview of the ISCA Hall of Fame Summit<\/span><\/h1>\n

The annual conference of the International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA) will be held in Clearwater Beach, Fla. on Aug 27-30. As is customary for the ISCA conference, there will be presentations by coaches, scientists and a combination of coaches and scientists. Experts from many countries are scheduled to speak.<\/p>\n

HEADLINERS<\/strong>
\nTwo internationally-recognized sport science giants headline the conference: Dr. Ra\u00fal Arellano from Spain and Dr. Didier Chollet from France. Both are biomechanists who have made numerous contributions to swimming knowledge, and will be making the ISCA 2019 Distinguished Scientist Lectures.<\/span>

EMPHASIS ON SCIENCE<\/span><\/strong>
\nThere are additional science-based presentations scheduled on psychology, physiology, biomechanics and sociology. Each presenter aims to explain how applying science can impact coaching in a positive way.<\/p>\n

VARIETY OF PRESENTATIONS<\/span><\/strong>
\nOther presenters will address a number of topics relevant to coaches and their athletes:
\n\u2022 Teaching principles for the new university coach\u2014Gregg Troy (Gator Swim Club)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Coach health and wellness\u2014Matthew Sprang (Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Breaststroke\u2014Sergio Lopez (Virginia Tech) and Chuck Katis (Bodbox)<\/em>
\n\u2022 The high school and club environment\u2014John Barnes (Blackline Aquatics)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Strength training\u2014Vern Gambetta (GAIN Network)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Business planning\u2014David Orr (Cascade Swim Club)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Autism\u2014Amanda Pope (Tidewater Adaptive Aquatics)<\/em><\/p>\n

PANEL ON SHOULDER INJURY PAIN<\/span><\/strong>
\nDr. John Heil (Swim Sport Psychology) and Dr. Rod Havriluk (Swimming Technology Research) will discuss shoulder injury pain. Panel will cover shoulder injuries from different perspectives, including swimmer response to shoulder problems, exposure time to shoulder stress, the impact of technique, required training adjustments and rehabilitation strategies.
\nOther panels will address:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Building a successful age group program with Michael Brooks (Weymouth Waves), Tom Himes (North Baltimore Aquatic Club) and David Orr (Cascade Swim Club)<\/em>
\n\u2022 Breaking the glass ceiling under the water with Carol Capitani (University of Texas), Kim Brackin (Brackin Elite Training) and Jim Ellis (Salvation Army Kroc Aquatics)<\/em><\/p>\n

CERTIFICATION COURSE OPPORTUNITIES<\/span><\/strong>
\nFirst day of the conference will offer courses for certification for water safety and recertification in water safety and lifeguarding. There will also be a course in adaptive aquatics by Amanda Pope of Tidewater Adaptive Training.<\/p>\n

HALL OF FAME<\/strong><\/span>
\nIn addition to the numerous and varied presentations, two coaches will be inducted into the ISCA Hall of Fame: Coach Gregg Troy (see Fig. 3) and Coach Jim Ellis (see Fig. 4). Summit will conclude with a presentation by ISCA Executive Director Doug Fonder on \u201cLooking Toward Tokyo 2020.<\/p>\n
