LOUGHBOROUGH, England, September 24. JON Rudd and Graham Wardell have been unveiled as the Head Coaches that will lead the England and Scotland teams at the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n
Rudd, Head Coach of Plymouth Leander Swimming Club, is best known for coaching Ruta Meilutyte to her Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 Games.<\/p>\n
“There is something very special about being part of an England team in swimming as we almost always compete under the Union Flag,” – Jon RuddThe Lithuanian swimmer backed that performance up with gold at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona. Rudd also coached Ben Proud to a new British record in the 50m Butterfly this season, breaking the previous marker had been standing for ten years.<\/p>\n
With almost 25 years experience, Rudd is looking forward to bringing his knowledge and skills to the new position.<\/p>\n
“It is a fantastic privilege to be leading my own country into a major games,” said Rudd. “There is something very special about being part of an England team in swimming as we almost always compete under the Union Flag.”<\/p>\n
City of Glasgow head coach Wardell has worked within swimming for almost 30 and has previously coached British former world champions Katy Sexton and Gemma Spofforth.<\/p>\n
“I know we will bring all of the fighting spirit and tenacity for which Scots are renowned to ensure we set the pool alight with our performances,” – Graham WardellWardell has placed athletes on to teams at every level of competition and most recently coached British record holder Robbie Renwick during the Olympics and World Championships.<\/p>\n
On being appointed to Scotland, Wardell commented: “Glasgow is a very special city which I hold dear to my heart so it is a huge honour to have been given this opportunity to lead the Scottish Swimming team in Glasgow.<\/p>\n
“I know we will bring all of the fighting spirit and tenacity for which Scots are renowned to ensure we set the pool alight with our performances.”<\/p>\n
The Wales head coach for Glasgow 2014 will be announced in early October.<\/p>\n
