The United States won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-world-university-games-day-1-swimming-finals-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three of the four gold medals<\/a> on the first night of the meet and won two more golds on night two. <strong>Ian Finnerty <\/strong>and <strong>Lisa Bratton <\/strong>lowered the meet records in their respective events on the way to gold medals.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tayla Lovemore\u00a0<\/strong>and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>also scored upsets in the 50 fly and 100 back respectively as they won their country&#8217;s first golds in the pool this week in Italy. Yang won narrowly over Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yuya Tanaka\u00a0<\/strong>(23.35) and Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Grigori Pekarski\u00a0<\/strong>(23.47).<\/p>\n<p>Yang was well off the meet record of 22.90 set by\u00a0<strong>Andrii Govorov\u00a0<\/strong>at the Taipei Games in 2017. DeLoof was the only swimmer to break 55 seconds with a 54.41 as she is well in front of Burchill (55.19). Tarasevich swam a 53.51 to take down the top seed\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States. Ress slipped to the bronze medal behind\u00a0<strong>Yohann N&#8217;Doye-Brouard\u00a0<\/strong>of France who swam a 53.80 for the silver.<\/p>\n<p>Ress had the fastest times out of the heats and the semi finals as he was a 53.47 last night in the semis. But Tarasevich took control in the final to win Russia&#8217;s first gold medal in swimming at the Games. Ress was unable to defend his 2017 title he won in Taipei.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zane Waddell<\/strong>, who swims at the University of Alabama, placed fourth at 53.87. There were six swimmers in the final that swam at American colleges. Tarasevich (Louisville), Ress (NC State) and Waddell (Alabama) swam in the United States as did USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bryce Mefford\u00a0<\/strong>(Cal), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mark Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>(Grand Canyon) and Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gabriel Fantoni\u00a0<\/strong>(Indiana).<\/p>\n<p>Mefford placed fifth at 54.42 as he was a tick faster in the semis at 54.34. Nikolaev (54.51) placed sixth while Fantoni (54.83) was eighth. Lovemore, who swam at Florida State, was a 26.25 in the final to take down Japan&#8217;s <strong>Ai Soma\u00a0<\/strong>(26.38) and Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeong Soeun\u00a0<\/strong>(26.41). Lovemore was well off the meet record of 25.72 set by China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lu Ying\u00a0<\/strong>in 2015 but she did win South Africa&#8217;s first medal of the Games in swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans did not have any swimmers in the final as\u00a0<strong>Kinge Zandringa\u00a0<\/strong>of the Netherlands placed fourth at 26.68. Finnerty swam a 59.49 in the 100 breast final to lower his 59.51 he set in the semis on Thursday. Finnerty, who was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/andrew-abruzzo-ali-deloof-ian-finnerty-added-to-u-s-rosters-for-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">late addition to the roster<\/a> for the meet, is now the second fastest American in 2019 behind fellow Indiana Hoosier\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cody-miller-nabs-first-in-100-breast-in-bloomington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">59.24<\/a>). He was able to win a close race ahead of 2017 Worlds bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia (59.50) and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yuya Hinomoto\u00a0<\/strong>(59.72).<\/p>\n<p>Finnerty has the American record in short course yards as he was the first (and only) man to break 50 seconds in yards. He won the NCAA titles in the 100 breast in 2018 and 2019. He hasn&#8217;t really had a breakout long course swim in the last few years to match his speed in short course. Finnerty was a 1:00.09 in 2017 at the US Open but had not broken a minute until this year.<\/p>\n<p>The 100 breast was a quick final as it was one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-world-university-games-five-mens-swimming-events-to-watch-this-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlighted races<\/a> to watch this week. She is almost a full second ahead of second place\u00a0<strong>Kanako Watanabe\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan, who was a 1:07.15. Schoenmaker looked long and strong as she is using Naples as a tune-up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/south-african-aquatics-teams-finalized-for-world-championships-18-swimmers-to-compete-in-gwangju\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 World Championships<\/a> in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Watanabe was the gold medalist in this event two years ago in Taipei but will have her hands full in trying to repeat in 2019 with Schoenmaker. The gold medal is expected to come down between those two swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jhennifer Alves\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.68) is currently the third seed for tomorrow&#8217;s final as it will be a tight race for the bronze medal. USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Weiss\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.78), who will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-jr-team-member-emily-weiss-verbally-commits-to-indianas-class-of-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">freshman at Indiana this fall<\/a>, is the fourth seed just ahead of Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mai Fukusawa\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.79) and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Vasey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.84).<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Hodges\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.94) and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Francesca Fangio\u00a0<\/strong>(1:08.17) also qualified for the final.<\/p>\n<p>American-based\u00a0<strong>Nina Kucheran<\/strong>, who is representing Canada but swims for Florida State, placed ninth at 1:08.51. Litchfield won the second semi final ahead of Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Juran Mizohata\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.16) as they moved through as the fastest two qualifiers for the final. Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alberto Razzetti\u00a0<\/strong>initially placed third at 2:00.18 but wound up disqualified for his back to breast transition. He will not be swimming in tomorrow&#8217;s final, thus opening the spot to Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felix Ziemann\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.61), who was initially ninth.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tomoya Takeuchi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.34) placed third overall as the Japanese will be the only country to have two swimmers in the final tomorrow. Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Sos\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.39), who swims collegiately at the University of Louisville, placed fourth. Bratton swam a 2:07.91 to lower the meet record that USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/asia-seidt-lowers-200-back-meet-record-at-world-university-games-in-semi-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set in the semi finals<\/a> at 2:08.81. She ended up winning the gold medal ahead of Seidt, who broke that record again in the final at 2:08.56 for the silver medal. Bratton is now the second fastest American for 2019 behind\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two Americans were well in front of the rest of the field as the bronze medal went to Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chloe Golding\u00a0<\/strong>(2:09.57).<\/p>\n<p>Moldova&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tatiana Salcutan\u00a0<\/strong>finished in fourth place at 2:10.86. American-based swimmers\u00a0<strong>Sonnele Ozturk\u00a0<\/strong>(Auburn) of Germany and\u00a0<strong>Kennedy Goss\u00a0<\/strong>(Indiana) of Canada finished in fifth and seventh.
