The United States women won the 4×100 free relay and broke the meet record in the event on the first night of the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy. The American team of\u00a0Veronica Burchill\u00a0<\/strong>(55.39),\u00a0Claire Rasmus\u00a0<\/strong>(54.63),\u00a0Catie DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(54.10) and\u00a0Gabby DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>(53.87) won the gold medal easily with a 3:37.99. They lowered the meet record of 3:38.12 from 2015 that the United States set with\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong>,\u00a0Shannon Vreeland<\/strong>,\u00a0Maddie Locus\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>four years ago in Gwangju.<\/p>\n

The Americans won by nearly four full seconds over Japan (3:41.74) and home country Italy (3:41.84). Japan was second with\u00a0Mayuka Yamamoto\u00a0<\/strong>(56.15),\u00a0Sachi Mochida\u00a0<\/strong>(55.60),\u00a0Kanako Watanabe\u00a0<\/strong>(55.55) and\u00a0Runa Imai\u00a0<\/strong>(54.44) for the silver medal. The Italians gave the home crowd something to cheer about with\u00a0Paola Biagioli\u00a0<\/strong>(55.75),\u00a0Gioelemaria Origlia\u00a0<\/strong>(55.72),\u00a0Giulia Verona\u00a0<\/strong>(55.52) and\u00a0Aglalia Pezzatto\u00a0<\/strong>(54.85) winning the bronze medal.<\/p>\n

The quickest splits outside of the top four came from Russia’s\u00a0Elizaveta Klevanovich\u00a0<\/strong>(55.46), Canada’s\u00a0Sarah Watson\u00a0<\/strong>(55.50), Poland’s\u00a0Paulina Peda\u00a0<\/strong>(55.82) and Canada’s\u00a0Ainsley McMurray\u00a0<\/strong>(56.10).<\/p>\n

Russia (3:44.84), Canada (3:44.89), Australia (3:46.63), Poland (3:47.59) and Singapore (3:52.98) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n
