Sato was ahead before Koch closed in the final 50.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> finished third in 2:10.76 to hold off <strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong> (2:11.03) and <strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> (2:11.06).<\/p>\n<h2>Women\u2019s 100 Breast<\/h2>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> pulled away for a strong victory in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:05.77. Her time crushed the field by two seconds and was a half second off the meet record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maria Temnikova<\/strong> made it a 1-2 Russian finish by taking second in 1:07.80.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alina Zmushka<\/strong> of Belarus finished third in 1:08.08.<\/p>\n<h2>Men\u2019s 100 Free<\/h2>\n<p>Another tie happened in the men\u2019s 100 free, though it was not for first place.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Vladislav Grinev<\/strong> won the event in 48.58, the only one in the field to break 49. It was not quite as fast as his 47.43 he set earlier this year as the world\u2019s top time of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s <strong>Andrey Zhilkin<\/strong> and France\u2019s <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> tied for second place in 49.24.<\/p>\n<h2>Women\u2019s 200 Free<\/h2>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> threw down a stunning performance in her first race of the meet to earn her country\u2019s first victory in the history of the Mare Nostrum Series.<\/p>\n<p>The recent Michigan graduate won the 200 free in 1:56.05, which was less than a tenth of a second away from her career-best performance that she set at the world championships in two years ago. It was also the fifth-fastest time of the year in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>, swimming her second event of the night, finished second in 1:57.72 to hold off Russia\u2019s <strong>Valeria Salamantina<\/strong> (1:57.83).<\/p>\n<h2>Men\u2019s 200 Fly<\/h2>\n<p>Hungary completed a 1-2 finish in the men\u2019s 200 fly as <strong>Bence Biczo<\/strong> and <strong>David Verraszto<\/strong> each finished under 1:59.<\/p>\n<p>Biczo won the race in 1:58.09 to hold off Verraszto (1:58.98).<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Tomoru Honda<\/strong> took third place 1:59.04.<\/p>\n<h2>Women\u2019s 100 Fly<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anastasiya Shkurdai<\/strong> of Belarus was the lone swimmer in the field to break 58 in the 100 fly and won the event in 57.78, the second-fastest time of her career.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s <strong>Beryl Gastaldello<\/strong> finished second in 58.20, followed by Russia\u2019s <strong>Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> (58.24).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natalie Hinds<\/strong> of the U.S. finished fourth in the event, clocking a 58.86.<\/p>\n<h2>Men\u2019s 100 Back<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> of the U.S. started strong and held off the field to win the 100 back in 53.84, the only one in the field to break 54. He used a late burst of speed to take the lead in the final meters.<\/p>\n<p>Greece\u2019s <strong>Apostolos Christou<\/strong> finished second in 54.25, while Austria\u2019s <strong>Bernhard Reitshammer<\/strong> finished third in 54.51.<\/p>\n<h2>Men\u2019s 200 IM<\/h2>\n<p>Japan\u2019s <strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> won the 200 IM, breaking the Monaco stop record in the series.<\/p>\n<p>Seto pulled ahead of the field on the back and finished in 1:57.60.<strong> Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> held the Monaco record in 1:57.79, set in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary\u2019s <strong>David Verraszto<\/strong> finished second in 2:01.58, well behind Seto, but well ahead of third-place <strong>Noe<\/strong> <strong>Ponti<\/strong> of Switzerland, who finished in 2:03.09.<\/p>\n<h2>SPRINT TOURNAMENT<\/h2>\n<h3>Quarterfinals<\/h3>\n<p>The top four reach the semis of the 50 events.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 50 fly, Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Andrii Govorov<\/strong> (23.43), Hungary\u2019s <strong>Szebasztian Szabo<\/strong> (23.62), Russia\u2019s <strong>Roland Schoeman<\/strong> (23.65) and Russia\u2019s <strong>Mikhail Vekovishchev<\/strong> (23.76) qualified for the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 50 fly, Hungary\u2019s <strong>Beatrix Bordas<\/strong> (26.64), Belgium\u2019s Kimberly Buys (26.66), Russia\u2019s <strong>Anna<\/strong> <strong>Surkova<\/strong> (26.74) and <strong>Anastasiya Shkurda<\/strong>i (26.92) of Belarus qualified for the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 50 back, <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> (24.82), Russia\u2019s <strong>Sergei Fesikov<\/strong> (25.06), Russia\u2019s <strong>Evgeny Rylov<\/strong> (25.15) and Greece\u2019s <strong>Apostolos Christou<\/strong> (35.33) advances to the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 50 back, Hong Kong\u2019s <strong>Stephanie Hoi Shun<\/strong> (27.98), Austria\u2019s <strong>Caroline Pilhatsch<\/strong> (28.08), Finland\u2019s <strong>Mimosa Jallow<\/strong> (28.28) and China\u2019s <strong>Wenwen Zhang<\/strong> (28.79) advanced.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 50 free, Brazil\u2019s <strong>Felipe Lima<\/strong> broke the Monaco record to win the quarterfinal heat in 26.79. Russia\u2019s<strong> Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> (27.01), American <strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> (27.34) and Japan\u2019s <strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong> (27.65) advanced.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 50 breast, Russia\u2019s <strong>Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> (30.59), Brazil\u2019s <strong>Jhennifer Conceicao<\/strong> (31.07), <strong>Alina<\/strong> <strong>Zmushka<\/strong> (31.08) of Belarus and Spain\u2019s <strong>Jessica Vall Montero<\/strong> (31.22) qualified.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 50 free, Greece\u2019s<strong> Kristian Gkolomeev<\/strong> (21.81), Brazil\u2019s <strong>Bruno Fratus<\/strong> (21.89), Japan\u2019s <strong>Shinri<\/strong> <strong>Shioura<\/strong> (22.09) and Finland\u2019s <strong>Ari Pekka Liukkonen<\/strong> (22.160 advanced.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 50 free, Russia\u2019s <strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> (24.41), France\u2019s <strong>Beryl Gastaldello<\/strong> (25.12), Hong Kong\u2019s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> (25.21) and Japan\u2019s <strong>Rika Omoto<\/strong> (25.26) qualified for the finals in the last heat of the day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2019 Mare Nostrum Series opened on Saturday with its first stop in Monaco.
