BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, January 10. THE LSU men’s squad picked up its first win of the 2013-14 season with a victory against SMU, 185-122, last night at the LSU Natatorium. <\/p>\n

\nThe LSU men’s swimming and diving team (1-3 overall, 0-3 SEC) collected its first win of the season over SMU 185-122 Thursday at the LSU Natatorium.<\/p>\n
“After not competing since midseason it was nice to come back and take advantages early on in the meet,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “We know we have some strong swims and we started early. We got momentum early and never let up. Everything is a process and its good to see our freshmen starting to see results.”<\/p>\n
Freshman Brandon Goldman led the Tigers with three wins in the 200 butterfly (1:49.95), 200 backstroke (1:48.34) and 200 IM (1:51.10). Goldman’s times were season highs.<\/p>\n
Freshman Elliot Dewlen touched the wall first in the 1000 freestyle (9:25.05) and 500 freestyle (4:34.73).<\/p>\n
“It’s good to see freshman fill some gaps for us and feeling more comfortable,” Geyer said. “Elliot (Dewlen) had a good break through swim in the 1000 and 500. It’s starting to fall in line. These are positive things for right now and the future.”<\/p>\n
Frank Greeff earned two victories on the day in the 200 freestyle (1:39.22) and 100 butterfly (49.58). Greeff also finished second in the 200 IM with a mark of 1:52.49.<\/p>\n
Ricardo Alvarado Jimenez notched a win in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.00) and a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke (56.26).<\/p>\n
Daniel Swietlicki finished first in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 50.21 and second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.07.<\/p>\n
Michael Saco finished first in the 100 freestyle (46.01) and second in the 50 freestyle (20.64).<\/p>\n
Gabe Rooker won the 100 breaststroke in 56.11 and third in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 4:42.95.<\/p>\n
Ricardo Alvarado Jiminez touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:01.00.<\/p>\n
Matthew Schaefer finished second in the 1000 freestyle (9:34.50) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:44.96).<\/p>\n
Logan Rysemus and Michael Young finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:49.99) and 200 backstroke (1:49.67).<\/p>\n
LSU began the meet with a win in the 200-medley relay. The team of Rysemus, Alvarado Jiminez, Alex Linge and Saco finished in 1:30.41. The team of Linge, Saco, Tyler Crosson and Gonzalez finished first in the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:03.36.<\/p>\n
In the diving events, senior Sean McKinney earned a second place finish on the 1-meter with a score of 349.35. McKinney also placed third on 3-meter with a final score of 360.23.<\/p>\n
Senior Kevin Leong finished fifth on 3-meter (328.35) and 1-meter (312.68).<\/p>\n
Freshman Zakary Rowton scored a season high score of 339.38 for a fourth place finish on 3-meter. Rowton also finished sixth on 1-meter with a score of 275.85.<\/p>\n
“I liked the spirit of what we showed to day,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “I expected things to be more challenging after such a hard grueling schedule. We were just really tired. I wanted to challenge them to perform in that environment. The mistakes you usually make in competition are because you are tired. It was a challenge today, but there were some good things out there.”<\/p>\n
Both the men’s and women’s team return to the pool Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. when they face Oklahoma Baptist in the LSU Relays<\/p>\n

\nJunior diver Devin Burnett finished first in both the 1 and 3-meter dives as he posted scores of 359.55 and 397.50, respectively, as the SMU men’s swimming and diving team fell to TCU, 185-112 in SMU’s second dual meet of the season. Freshman Ziga Cerkovnik made his collegiate debut today and placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.59. <\/p>\n
In the 100-yard butterfly, Cerkovnik finished second in 49.88.<\/p>\n
“Ziga made his presence known and competed really well in his first race of the season,” head coach Eddie Sinnott said. “Devin led the divers who all competed and scored well.”<\/p>\n
In addition to Burnett, freshman diver Bryce Klein placed second (393.83) in the 3-meter dive and third (336.83) in the 1-meter dive.<\/p>\n
In relays, the Ponies won the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of seniors Matt Roney, Ryan Koops, junior Giedrius Andriunaitis and Cerkovnik placed first with a time of 3:05.15. In the 200-yard medley relay, seniors Braeden Newton, Nicolai Hansen, Koops and Cerkovnik finished third in 1:32.54.<\/p>\n
Individually, Roney finished runner-up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle races with times of 46.40 and 1:40.3, respectively. In the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, senior Nicolai Hansen placed runner-up in both with times of 2:04.34 and 1:52.93, respectively. Hansen also finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.54.<\/p>\n
“I’m glad Nicolai was able to get back and compete today,” Sinnott said.<\/p>\n
Junior Tyler Rauth finished third (1:53.4) in the 200-yard butterfly, while sophomore Eastman Holloway placed second (4:40.16) in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 1000-yard freestyle, junior Gabo Andonie paced the Mustangs as he placed fourth with a time of 9:41.27.<\/p>\n
“It was good to get the second semester going,” Sinnott continued. “We are all excited to come back to compete in Dallas next week and continue training for the upcoming championship season.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
