18th FINA World Aquatics Championships Preview: Diving

The diving competition at the World Championships the year before an Olympics is very important: it\u2019s the first opportunity in which divers can qualify for the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Chinese divers head the list of favorites in most events, including Lu Wie<\/strong>, a 14-year-old prodigy who has won all of the FINA World Series women\u2019s platform events this year; Can Yuan<\/strong>, a versatile two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World champion; and Shi Tingmao<\/strong>, a two-time springboard Olympic gold medalist and four-time FINA Diver of the Year. Favorites, yes…but China is not unbeatable!<\/p>\n

British diver Tom Daly<\/strong> recently bested Jian Yang<\/strong> on men\u2019s platform in the FINA World Series. At the same event, China\u2019s women\u2019s synchronized platform team lost to Jin Mi Jo<\/strong> and Mi Rae Kim<\/strong> of North Korea and Caeli McKay<\/strong> and Meaghan Benefeito<\/strong> from Canada.<\/p>\n

High diving\u2014On the women\u2019s side, Australia\u2019s Rhiannan Iffland<\/strong> is the clear favorite. Just last year, she became the most decorated female cliff diver of all time, and she\u2019s showing no signs of slowing down. For the men, veteran diver Gary Hunt<\/strong> of the United Kingdom is a favorite. He has 11 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series seasons under his belt, winning the overall title seven times.<\/p>\n
