ATHENS, Georgia, January 4. JUST hours before Georgia is set to face N.C. State at the Gabrielsen Natatorium today in Athens, Georgia Athletics has announced that head coach Jack Bauerle and top sophomore swimmer Chase Kalisz have been suspended from the meet pending an academic eligibility review. <\/p>\n
Both Bauerle and Kalisz refused comment when Swimming World reached them. <\/p>\n
Today is Bauerle’s first chance at reaching 500 wins, and should the Bulldogs beat N.C. State the win would still be credited to Bauerle. <\/p>\n
“Jack Bauerle is still our head coach whether he’s there or not,” Athletics Director Greg McGarity said of Bauerle reaching the 500-win milestone.<\/p>\n
Senior associate head coach Harvey Humphries will run the program until the academic review is completed. <\/p>\n
This isn’t the first time there have been some academic issues regarding Kalisz. He delayed his enrollment at Georgia before becoming eligible during the spring semester of his freshman year. It didn’t seem to hamper him as he went on to win the 400-yard IM title as a rookie. <\/p>\n
The surprising part of this action is Bauerle’s suspension. Most academic issues wind up costing the student-athlete and not the coach. Georgia may be taking precautionary measures to see if Bauerle was complicit in any academic problems involving Kalisz. <\/p>\n
The situation will likely be resolved once Georgia is back in session during the spring semester. <\/p>\n
