OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma, December 22. WITH the backdrop of air quality issues similar to the USA Swimming Winter Junior Nationals, the Chesapeake Elite Pro-Am came to a close this evening. With coaches falling ill, and some swimmers calling it a day early due to air quality problems, there was still plenty of fast swimming <\/p>\n
BCH’s Abigail Richter, 14, smashed her lifetime best in the women’s 200-yard back with a 1:56.70 for the win. That swim cut two seconds off her best of 1:58.79 from February of this year. Lane Four’s Alexa Harris placed second in 1:58.66, while CSC’s Rylee Linhardt picked up third in 2:00.50. <\/p>\n
Schroeder’s Ellis Miller followed in the men’s 200-yard back with a lifetime best of 1:42.92 for the win. That swim clipped his 1:42.95 from last year’s edition of the Elite Pro-Am. Teammate Adam Mania touched a distant second in 1:45.55, while Nick Carter rounded out the top three in 1:46.93. <\/p>\n
In the always exciting sprint frees, SwimMAC’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace continued her strong meet with a 48.08 for the women’s 100-yard freestyle victory. This, after winning the 50 free knockouts last night. The performance downed the meet record in the event. Stanford’s Andi Murez hit the wall a close second in 48.14, while Mission Viejo’s Kathryn McLaughlin, 16, finished third in 49.52. That’s a personal best for McLaughlin, beating the 49.74 she clocked here last year.<\/p>\n
McLaughlin also kept on a roll here in Oklahoma City, winning the women’s 200-yard fly in 1:54.48. That cut two seconds off her personal best of 1:56.57 from last year’s meet. <\/p>\n
Vanderpool-Wallace doubled up with a swift 24.01 in the women’s 50 fly, while CSC’s Samantha Woodward touched second in 24.37. NYAC’s Josh Schneider had a strong 50 fly as well, winning the men’s finale in 21.07. Mania took second in 21.37, whlie Zach McGinnis tied Coville for third with matching 21.70s. <\/p>\n
NYAC’s Darian Townsend continued on his recent career tear with a 42.50 to win the men’s 100-yard free. That’s the fourth-best time he’s ever gone in the event. SwimMAC’s Dax Hill took second in 43.28, while Stanford’s Alex Coville placed third in 43.43. <\/p>\n
After setting the 13-14 U.S. National Age Group record during a time trial yesterday afternoon with a 44.73, Michael Andrew had a tougher time of it during the individual final when he took eighth in 45.35. <\/p>\n
Stanford’s Bobby Bollier took home the men’s 200-yard fly title in 1:43.35, while Justin Wu picked up second-place honors in 1:48.36. Mark Jurek rounded out the top three in 1:48.54. <\/p>\n
Ashley Steenvoorden completed the distance free sweep with a 16:16.94 in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle finale. Mission Viejo’s Brooke Lorentzen snared second in 16:33.33, while Nadadore teammate Amanda Barnes claimed third in 17:00.46. <\/p>\n
Mission Viejo’s Nicholas Norman, the latest in a long string of top-flight male distance swimmers out of Mission Viejo, took the title in the men’s 1650-yard free with a 14:58.76. That’s a massive personal best for the 16-year-old swimmer, crushing through the 15:00 barrier from his previous record of 15:17.75 from last year.
