SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia, December 18. IN just two days, some of the world’s best swimmers will be vying for plenty of rubles at the Salnikov Cup in Saint Petersburg, Russia. While plenty of swim fans are upset that many of Europe’s best elected to swim in this meet as opposed to the Duel in the Pool being held the same weekend, there’s little doubt the two meets will be comparing results Dec. 20-21.<\/p>\n
Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu has her typical loaded event schedule, competing in the 100 free, 50 breast, 400 IM, 100 back, 200 fly, 400 free, 200 breast, 100 IM and 50 fly in that order. That’s a total of nine events she’s registered to compete in, with at least five that she’s likely to win. <\/p>\n
Hosszu is looking for a bit of a rebound from the European Short Course Championships, where even though she won four medals and still was awarded swimmer of the meet honors, she just seemed a bit off her game. Her husband and head coach Shane Tusup confirmed that with Swimming World shortly after Herning, explaining that he’s been testing some new variables with Hosszu’s rest pattern, and we could see Hosszu at her best here in Russia.<\/p>\n
Another swimmer who tore up the Euro SC Champs last weekend was the Sizzling Siberian Vlad Morozov. He’s definitely looking to perform well in his home country, and is slated to appear in the 100 free, 50 breast, 100 IM, 100 breast, 50 back and 50 free. He’s another swimmer that might not have put up his best times in Herning, considering he had an illness heading into the meet. He could put up some special times in Saint Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Salnikov Cup also produced a pretty slick hype video demonstrating the pomp and circumstance of the meet, that has become one of the top money meets in the world. Vladimir Salnikov, one of the top distance freestylers in history and the 1982 World Swimmer of the Year, has definitely helped move this meet to a new level of excitement over the years, with plenty of prize money on offer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
