LANCASTER, Pennsylvania, December 16. GOLDEN Ram Aquatics’ Matt Magness really surprised those in attendance at the TYR Cup with his amazing 200-yard freestyle National Age Group record this weekend. <\/p>\n

In a bit of a surprise this weekend at the TYR Cup, Magness took down Nick Silverthorn’s 11-12 U.S. National Age Group record in the 200-yard free with ease. <\/p>\n
Magness threw down a 1:45.52 in the finale of the event, dropping seven seconds from his preliminary swim of 1:51.18. In fact, he entered the event with a seed time of a 1:52.88, representing a gigantic drop into a new level of swimming. He split the race 24.69, 27.17, 27.46, 26.20, en route to knocking a second off Silverthorn’s 1:46.23 set back in 2008. <\/p>\n
Magness had a strong meet overall. He also won the 50 fly in 25.51, the 100 free in 49.73, the 100 IM in 57.07, the 50 free in 22.69, the 50 back in 25.93, the 100 back in 54.64 and the 100 fly in 54.99. <\/p>\n
This type of swim is impressive for Magness, considering that Silverthorn went on to sign with the California Golden Bears this year as he continues to progress well through his swimming career. If Magness can follow the same progression, there’s no telling what he can do in this sport. <\/p>\n
Magness turned 13 the day of his swim, but rules regarding national age group records dictate that you remain the age you were on the first day of competition throughout the meet. This rule impacted Simone Manuel, who took down the 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record in the 50-meter freestyle this summer even though she’d already turned 17 during Worlds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
