PIETER van den Hoogenband decided to swim the 400 freestyle here, rather than the 100, because he primarily has been training for endurance.

Last year during the Nationals, he planned to lower his national record, which he previously set in Toulouse during preparation for the 2000 Olympics. Compared to last year where he fell short, he now has gained a lot of endurance and more confidence. With 53.31, 1:50.98 and 2:49.58 splits, he swam a 3:47.20 (New Dutch National Record).

Van den Hoogenband is going to focus more on the 100 and 200 next month during workouts, especially on the speed aspects. As preparation for the European Championships, he’ll swim two meets on the Mare Nostrum Tour in June, Canet and Monaco.

"I’m still in normal training, my target there is to swim under 49 at the 100 free. If I succeed, I’m ready for Berlin."

Carla Geurts won the women’s 400 freestyle in 4:18.69, qualifying for Berlin. Geurts is still uncertain if she’ll attend the EC because of previous commitments and scheduling conflicts regarding finishing her PhD in Canada.

Thijs van Valkengoed, winner and EC qualifier in the 200m breast, won the 100m in 1:03.65. Shortly thereafter, second place finisher (1:03.76), Benno Kuipers announced his retirement. "I have to be realistic," Kuipers said. "If my body doesn’t want it anymore, it’s over. My target was qualifying for the European Championships. I failed, so it’s time to quit."

Kuipers placed fourth in the Euros in 1997 in the 200 breast, and sixth at the 1998 Worlds. Because of health problems, unfortunately, his progression stopped. He had two chest operations for his lungs, and separately a car accident. "I therefore never had the chance to reach the top. After all these disappointments, I wanted to try it once more at the TZA-team. But now I failed qualifying, it’s no use to continue." Given the obstacles and disappointments, he had an excellent career and will be sorely missed.

Madelon Baans won the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:11.71.

The Netherlands usually has only one swimmer qualifying for the 200 fly at international meets – Stefan Aartsen. Aartsen has demonstrated he has the power, winning in 1:59.62, and securing a spot for the ECs in Berlin.

Without Inge de Bruijn, the race in the women’s 100m freestyle remained open. Chantal Groot won the event against a strong field. Her 56.08 was just enough to beat Marleen Veldhuis (56.21). Wilma van Rijn finished third in 56.43, having previously qualified in the event earlier. Groot and Veldhuis are candidates for the 400m freestyle relay, which is a medal contender in Berlin. Without Van den Hoogenband, Johan Kenkhuis won the 100m free in 50.12 (50.09 prelims).

RESULTS
Dutch Long Course Nationals Amersfoort
April 21, 2002

Event 50 400 m.freestyle women
***********************************************************************

  1 Carla Geurts UZSC 71-00178 4.18.69 1.01.17 2.06.30 3.12.50
2 Haike van Stralen AZ&PC 83-01926 4.18.97 1.02.24 2.08.06 3.13.76
3 Etta vd Weijden MNC Dordrecht 79-00974 4.24.91 1.03.04 2.11.07 3.19.43
4 Celina Lemmen DWK-XCESS 85-01866 4.25.14 1.03.21 2.11.92 3.20.09
5 Marieke Stuiver AZ&PC 85-02812 4.30.06 1.03.34 2.11.65 3.21.28
6 Karin Kraaijeveld MNC Dordrecht 85-01710 4.30.82 1.04.37 2.14.02 3.23.85
7 Claudia Belderbos AZ&PC 85-00174 4.35.85 1.05.39 2.14.66 3.25.16
8 Daphne ten Brink WZ&PC 85-00454 4.40.81 1.03.69 2.15.00 3.27.70

Event 51 400 m.freestyle men
***********************************************************************

  1 Pieter vd Hoogenband PSV 78-00443 3.47.20 0.53.31 1.50.98 2.49.58
2 Thomas Felten Aqua-Novio'94 83-00655 4.01.09 0.58.36 1.59.51 3.01.09
3 Robin van Aggele AZ&PC 84-00017 4.03.75 0.55.19 1.57.97 3.01.48
4 Stephan Schoon DWK-XCESS 83-01895 4.10.47 0.58.78 2.01.16 3.06.28
5 John Keetman DWK-XCESS 84-01145 4.12.50 0.58.76 2.03.23 3.08.58
6 David Groenendaal PSV 85-00869 4.12.53 0.59.13 2.03.55 3.09.88
7 Stefan Oosting PSV 81-01265 4.12.89 0.59.91 2.03.69 3.08.50
8 Thomas Wessel Arke De Dinkel 83-02333 4.17.77 1.00.39 2.05.87 3.12.50

Event 52 100 m.breaststroke women
***********************************************************************

  1 Madelon Baans De Kempvis 77-00032 1.11.71 0.34.31
2 Miranda Bosma PSV 78-00098 1.12.38 0.34.40
3 Ilse Kikkert PSV 81-00774 1.14.37 0.33.78
4 Velda Moonen PSV 85-02104 1.15.45 0.35.05
5 Hester Broekhuizen AZ&PC 78-00126 1.15.69 0.34.69
6 Marja Terlage Het Y-mere (SG) 78-00738 1.15.92 0.34.99
7 Laura Badoux HHC (SG) 82-00038 1.16.94 0.36.02
8 Margriet Zwanenburg HZ&PC Heerenveen 86-04274 1.17.59 0.35.90

Event 52b 100 m.breaststroke women
***********************************************************************

  1 Jolijn van Valkengoed De Dolfijn 81-01516 1.15.64 0.35.42
2 Melanie ten Brink Rutac Swimteam 81-00232 1.15.90 0.35.92
3 Lia Dekker HZ&PC Heerenveen 87-00830 1.18.37 0.36.84
4 Astrid Koert MNC Dordrecht 80-00612 1.18.63 0.37.09
5 Lisette vd Velde RZ 86-03674 1.18.71 0.37.39
6 Amber Otten DWK-XCESS 86-02726 1.18.91 0.36.97
7 Kim Elsinga De Otters Het Gooi 86-01030 1.19.11* 0.37.95
8 Carine Vos Vriledo 87-04430 1.20.15 0.37.87

Event 53 100 m.breaststroke men
***********************************************************************

  1 Thijs v.
