{"id":370646,"date":"2019-05-23T09:32:58","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T16:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=370646"},"modified":"2019-05-23T09:32:58","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T16:32:58","slug":"allison-schmitt-elected-to-michigan-sports-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/allison-schmitt-elected-to-michigan-sports-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Allison Schmitt Elected to Michigan Sports Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong> was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame this week.<\/p>\n<p>She is part of a prestigious class of 2019 that includes national champions, Stanley Cup champions and more.<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt crew up in Canton, Michigan, and was a four-time high school state champion for Canton High School. In 2006-07, she won the 200-yard and 500 freestyle events at the Division 1 level. Her 1:46.25 is still the state record in the 200.<\/p>\n<p>She also swam for Club Wolverine and the Ann Arbor Swim Club growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt is a three-time Olympian, competing in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio in 2016. In total, she has four gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals. Her most notable moment was winning the 200 free in London.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the Olympics, she was a four-time NCAA champion at Georgia and was named the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/allison-schmitt-wins-coveted-honda-sports-award-for-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Honda Sports Award<\/a> winner for swimming in 2013 after leading the Bulldogs to the national title.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Schmitt has returned to swimming after battling depression, and been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/allison-schmitt-returns-to-u-s-team-with-emotion-and-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inspirational speaker<\/a> on the subject, hoping to help others avoid the same situation.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the Hall of Fame class includes University of Michigan Heisman Trophy winner <strong>Charles Woodson<\/strong>, who led Michigan to the 1997 national title.<\/p>\n<p>Other notables include Michigan State basketball star<strong> Morris Peterson<\/strong>, who led the Spartans to the 2000 national title, <strong>Grant Hill<\/strong>, a former Detroit Pistons All-Star and NBA great, <strong>Vladimir Konstantinov<\/strong>, a 1997 Stanley Cup champion with the Detroit Red Wings, whose promising career was cut short by a car crash that left him paralyzed.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the class includes, former high school sports star <strong>Diane Dietz<\/strong>, legendary high school basketball coach <strong>Dan Fife, Tom Wilson<\/strong>, former Pistons executive and two members of the media \u2014 <strong>Harry Atkins<\/strong>, who was a longtime Associated Press Michigan Sports Editor, and <strong>Mike O\u2019Hara<\/strong>, who covered the Detroit Lions for the Detroit News for 31 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allison Schmitt was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame this week.
