PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, December 7. DICK Shoulberg’s sudden removal from the head coaching position at Germantown Academy was caused by a hazing incident involving two male members of the swim team, according to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer.<\/p>\n
The article uses unidentified sources close to the program in describing an incident two years ago in which one male student urinated on another one. The article does not say what caused the staff at Germantown to be aware of the situation this year.<\/p>\n
Shoulberg was put on administrative leave from his 44-year position as head coach last month, with Claire Crippen and Chris Lear serving as acting head coaches while the school investigates the incident.<\/p>\n
According to the Inquirer, differing tales of the actions taken upon public revelation of the incident exist. Sources close to Shoulberg say the coach alerted school officials immediately, while those who have ties to the administration claim Shoulberg tried to keep the incident under wraps.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Shoulberg supporters have created a petion at Change.org to get the famed coach back on deck. Among the list of supporters in the petition so so far: Olympic coach Mark Schubert, national team member Robert Margalis and National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Past President Dana Abbott.<\/p>\n
