AUSTIN, Texas, December 6. ARIZONA’s Kevin Cordes couldn’t let Nick Thoman have all the fun tonight as the Wildcat took down the American record in the men’s 100-yard breast at the Texas Invitational this evening.<\/p>\n
After teasing the likelihood of a record with a 50.83 this morning, Cordes blazed his way to a 50.70 this evening (10.61, 13.81, 12.59, 13.69) this evening in Austin. That performance took down his previous American and U.S. Open mark of 50.74 set in March at NCAAs this year. <\/p>\n
That’s Cordes’ fourth time under 51 seconds now, as he previously also clocked a 50.93 at NCAAs as well. Also, incidentally, his time tonight also stands as the NCAA and U.S. Open record as well.<\/p>\n
Teammate Kevin Steel took second in 52.58, while USC’s Morten Klarskov placed third in 53.65. <\/p>\n
Arizona and USC continued their dominance of the Texas Invite, with first place in every event going to one of the two PAC-12 teams. The night also saw Arizona’s Kevin Cordes break his own American record in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
The night started out with a close win for USC in the 200 medley relay. The team of Kendyl Stewart, Kasey Carlson, Jasmine Tosky, and Katarzyna Wilk (1:37.54) just edged out Texas’ team of Lily Moldenhauer, Gretchen Jaques, Skylar Smith, and Ellen Lobb (1:37.60). Both teams earned NCAA A-cuts for their swims. Wisconsin finished third with a time of 1:38.62.<\/p>\n
Stina Gardell of USC got her second win of the meet in the 400 IM. Her time of 4:03.56 earned her an NCAA A-cut. Her teammate Meghan Hawthorne was second at 4:07.28, and Penn State’s Gabi Shishkoff touched third at 4:09.00.<\/p>\n
Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon continued her strong meet with an A-cut and win in the 200 free. Brandon’s time of 1:43.89 is the fourth fastest collegiate swim this season. The Longhorns’ Sam Tucker hit the wall second at 1:44.63, just ahead of USC’s Chelsea Chenault (1:44.68).<\/p>\n
The Trojans picked up another win on the night courtesy of Kasey Carlson. The senior clocked in at 58.61 for an A-cut and the second fastest time collegiate of the season. Texas graduate and recent Arena signee Laura Sogar touched second at 58.98, with fellow Longhorn Gretchen Jaques placing third at 1:00.00.<\/p>\n
Kendyl Stewart of USC got the win in the 100 back with a time of 52.29. Texas’ Lily Moldenhauer hit the wall second at 52.57, just edging out UCLA’s Linnea Mack (52.59).<\/p>\n
USC doubled up on relays for the night with a win in the 800 free relay. The team of Chelsea Chenault, Henriette Stenkvist, Lexie Malazdrewicz, and Lynette Lim earned an A-cut for their winning time of 7:02.76. Texas touched second at 7:09.84, with Penn State clocking in at 7:10.86 for third.<\/p>\n
The Arizona men kicked off their night with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Wildcats B-relay of Shep Sheppard, Kevin Steel, Andrew Porter, and Brian Stevens put down a 1:25.40 to tie for the best time in the country this season with Michigan. The Arizona A-relay was DQed but would have had the fastest time of the night and a pool record. Texas’ team of Aaron Gustafson, Charlie Moore, Jack Conger, and Matt Ellis touched second with a time of 1:25.90, while Penn State clocked in third a 1:26.93. Both Arizona and Texas earned NCAA A-cuts for their swims.<\/p>\n
Michael Meyer of Arizona earned an A-cut for his winning time of 3:41.73 in the 400 IM. That time puts him at third fastest this season among college swimmers. BYU’s Hayden Palmer was second at 3:45.38, touching out Arizona’s Sam Rowan (3:45.64).<\/p>\n
Christian Quintero of USC got another win on the weekend with his 1:33.50 in the 200 free. With the results from AT&T Winter Nationals earlier in the evening, that puts the Venezuelan at the third fastest time of the season. Texas’ Clay Youngquist clocked in at 1:33.72 for second, with the Trojans’ Dimitri Colupaev third at 1:34.13.<\/p>\n
In the 100 back, the Wildcats’ Mitchell Friedemann placed first with a time of 46.01. Friedemann’s prelims time of 45.52 from the morning was the fastest collegiate swim in the nation this season. USC’s Luca Spinazzola touched second at 46.31, while Penn State’s Shane Ryan hit the wall third at 46.71.<\/p>\n
The Trojans closed out the night with a victory in the 800 free relay. The team of Christian Quintero, Reed Malone, Michael Domagala, and Dimitri Colupaev clocked in first at 6:17.40 for an NCAA A-cut. Texas also earned an A-cut, with the team of Sam Lewis, Jack Conger, Matt Ellis, and Clay Youngquist touching second in 6:23.58.
