With consistent splits and a strong final lap, there was no catching Grothe, and Felix Auboeck (3:52.69) was left to contend for second. Johannes Callon (3:54.21) chased the University of Michigan swimmer throughout, but was unable to match his closing speed. Patrick Callen also put forth an impressive effort, stopping the clocks at 3:54.40 to nab fourth ahead of Mikey Calvillo (3:55.99). Eric Knowles showed no signs of fatigue, as he closed in on a 3:56.50 finish, putting distance between himself and Marcelo Acosta (3:58.46).
