The 2019 Colorado Boys 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Friday, May 17 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center (VMAC) in Thornton, Co.<\/p>\n

Legacy’s\u00a0Lukas Miller\u00a0<\/strong>broke the Colorado state record in the 200 free while Regis Jesuit’s\u00a0William Goodwin\u00a0<\/strong>did the same in the 100 breast. After finishing third last year, Cherry Creek grabbed the team title with a total of 520 points.<\/p>\n

Cherry Creek began their winning ways as the team of\u00a0Jake Russell\u00a0<\/strong>(23.20),\u00a0Spencer Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(24.97),\u00a0Lars Hanna\u00a0<\/strong>(23.42) and\u00a0Bryce Ortanes\u00a0<\/strong>(20.41) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in a combined time of 1:32.00.<\/p>\n

Miller\u00a0<\/strong>dominated the 200 free, winning the event by over six seconds as the only swimmer in the field under the 1:40 barrier with a final time of 1:35.72. His time broke the 5A and Colorado state record of 1:36.00 set by\u00a0Clark Smith\u00a0<\/strong>in 2013.\u00a0Not too long after, he added his second gold medal of the meet after winning the 500 free in 4:35.22.<\/p>\n

Goodwin\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 IM, breaking the 1:50 barrier to finish first in 1:48.57. He later won the 100 breast as well, getting his hands to the wall the fastest in a final time of 54.67 to eclipse the 5A and Colorado state mark of 54.68 set by\u00a0Nick Hatanaka\u00a0<\/strong>in 2013.<\/p>\n

Cherry Creek’s\u00a0Brendan Eckerman\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted his way to the gold medal in the 50 free, splashing-and-dashing his way to the wall in 20.69 to edge out runner-up\u00a0Josh Pales\u00a0<\/strong>(20.71) of Fossil Ridge. Eckerman than proved his sprint talent by also winning the 100 free in a quick 45.62.<\/p>\n

Boulder’s\u00a0Max Kreidl\u00a0<\/strong>flew to first in the 100 fly as the first of only three swimmers under the 50-second mark, touching the wall in 48.72.\u00a0Columbine’s\u00a0Gavin Olson\u00a0<\/strong>led the charge in the 100 back, powering home to the win in 48.22. Quinn Henninger\u00a0<\/strong>of Regis Jesuit dove to first on the 1-meter diving board, posting a final score of 606.50 for the state title.<\/p>\n

Cherry Creek’s\u00a0Nikolas Silolahti\u00a0<\/strong>(21.69),\u00a0Tommy Salvetti\u00a0<\/strong>(21.74),\u00a0Blake Jorgens\u00a0<\/strong>(21.41) and Eckerman (19.89) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.73. Silolahti (46.94), Hanna (46.57), Ortanes (46.00) and Eckerman (44.69) completed the relay sweep by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:04.20.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
