﻿{"id":369028,"date":"2019-05-13T17:59:16","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T00:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=369028"},"modified":"2019-05-13T17:59:16","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T00:59:16","slug":"swimming-australia-names-2019-open-water-world-championship-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-australia-names-2019-open-water-world-championship-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Swimming Australia Names 2019 Open Water World Championship Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first eight athletes to qualify for the Australian swim team heading to July\u2019s World Swimming Championships in South Korea have been named, as Swimming Australia finalizes its open water representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Comprising of four male and four female swimmers, <strong>Kareena Lee<\/strong> (Noosa), <strong>Nick Sloman<\/strong> (Noosa), <strong>Mackenzie Brazier<\/strong> (Noosa), <strong>Chloe Gubecka<\/strong> (Kawana Waters), <strong>Bailey Armstrong<\/strong> (Kawana Waters), <strong>Hayden Cotter<\/strong> (Lawnton), <strong>Kai Edwards<\/strong> (TSS Aquatics) and <strong>Chelsea Gubecka<\/strong> (Yeronga Park), have all secured their seat to Yeosu.<\/p>\n<p>Their selection comes after the conclusion of Swimming Australia\u2019s two qualifying events \u2013 the first and second legs of FINA\u2019s Marathon Swim World Series in Doha and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-marathon-swim-world-series-10ks-won-by-arianna-bridi-marc-antoine-olivier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seychelles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Lee and Sloman have made a blistering start to the 2019 season, claiming national 10km titles in January in Adelaide, Midmar Mile honours in South Africa in February and both receiving a silver medal in a stage of the world swim series \u2013 Lee in Doha and Sloman in Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p>Providing experience to the team, the duo will also be joined by a host of new Dolphins, with Brazier, Cotter, Armstrong, Edwards and Chloe Gubecka making their Australian senior debut.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Australia\u2019s General Manager \u2013 Paralympic and Open Water Programs, <strong>Adam Pine<\/strong>, commended the athletes on their accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to congratulate our eight open water swimmers who will represent Australia at the World Championships in July,\u201d Pine said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of all Australians at the World Series event in the Seychelles shows our depth and potential and we\u2019re looking forward to continuing this form into the World Championships in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve all put in a lot of hard work to get to this point and I have no doubt between now and champs they\u2019ll continue to train intensely so they\u2019re prepared to take on the best in the world in eight weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, with Tokyo 2020 around the corner, this meet gives our 10km swimmers the chance to qualify for the Olympic team, spurring on fierce and tough competition in a strong international field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach <strong>Ron McKeon<\/strong> will accompany the team as well as fellow coaches <strong>John Rodgers<\/strong> (Noosa), <strong>Robert Van Der Zant<\/strong> (Yeronga Park) and <strong>Michael Sage<\/strong> (Kawana Waters).<\/p>\n<h2>Swimming Australia Open Water World Championships Team:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bailey Armstrong (Kawana Waters)<\/li>\n<li>Mackenzie Brazier (Noosa)<\/li>\n<li>Hayden Cotter (Lawnton)<\/li>\n<li>Kai Edwards (TSS Aquatics)<\/li>\n<li>Chelsea Gubecka (Yeronga Park)<\/li>\n<li>Chloe Gubecka (Kawana Waters)<\/li>\n<li>Kareena Lee (Noosa)<\/li>\n<li>Nick Sloman (Noosa)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Swimming Australia<\/i><i>.
