{"id":368834,"date":"2019-05-12T19:28:20","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T02:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=368834"},"modified":"2019-05-12T19:28:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T02:28:20","slug":"sophie-pascoe-breaks-three-world-records-at-world-para-swimming-world-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sophie-pascoe-breaks-three-world-records-at-world-para-swimming-world-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Sophie Pascoe Breaks Three World Records at World Para Swimming World Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand\u2019s <strong>Sophie Pascoe<\/strong> was no doubt the star of the World Para Swimming World Series in Singapore, as the event wrapped up on Sunday night at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old claimed yet another world record \u2013 her third in as many days \u2013 capping the meet with her favorite event, and a fourth gold medal overall. She touched home first in 2:25.22 for a new SM9 world record in the women\u2019s 200m individual medley, taking top position ahead of Russia\u2019s <strong>Valeriia Shabalina<\/strong> and Jessica Long of the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t actually expect that time. I was expecting something about a high 2:26,\u201d said Pascoe, a nine-time Paralympic champion. \u201cMy training is working. It\u2019s such a good feeling to know that what I\u2019ve been doing the past few months is working, and to know that I\u2019m not in peak condition yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The veteran of three Paralympics so far said she is pleased with how she has been able to control her competition jitters better in Singapore, which should come in handy as she prepares for the New Zealand nationals and world championships.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI\u2019ve had a good couple of years. I wanted 2019 to be my year and obviously, 2020 to be the ultimate, so I\u2019m looking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s <strong>Brenda Anellia Larry<\/strong> also had something to cheer as the meet came to a conclusion, clocking a S4 Asian record in the women\u2019s 50m butterfly in the heats with 1:11.92, before shaving that down to 1:09.72 in the final.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI\u2019m really happy because this is my first time getting an Asian record. I trained very hard just for this competition. I feel more confident going into Tokyo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hosts Singapore picked up two more medals to close out the event. Three-time Paralympic champion <strong>Pin Xiu<\/strong> <strong>Yip<\/strong> took silver in the women\u2019s 50m backstroke, finishing behind Turkey\u2019s<strong> Sumeyye Boyaci<\/strong> and ahead of Japan\u2019s <strong>Mayumi Narita<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Compatriot <strong>Wei Soong Toh<\/strong> claimed a silver in the men\u2019s 50m butterfly, sharing the podium with gold medalist <strong>Jingang Wang<\/strong> of China and bronze medalist <strong>Andrei Granichka<\/strong>. It adds to his gold in the men\u2019s 100m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI\u2019m really happy with my performance at the meet. It\u2019s great that we had a World Series in Singapore, to be competing on home ground and having all the support from my parents, my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old, who is penciled in the world championships in September and possibly the Berlin leg of the World Series, said there are many takeaways from this meet. He said: \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s fun, right? You still have a long way to go and still a lot of things to work on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first Asian leg in the World Series\u2019 history ended with New Zealand and Japan sharing top honors on the medal table. Both teams took five gold medals over three days of racing.<\/p>\n<p>Pascoe accounted for four of New Zealand\u2019s golds, while <strong>Cameron Leslie<\/strong> added a fifth in the men\u2019s 50m backstroke.
