WUPPERTAL, Germany, November 24. AFTER not being in the pool for national competition in half a year and sitting out the World Championships in Barcelona in summer due to several injuries, Paul Biedermann made his return to the pool this week at the German short course nationals. However, he is not going to start at the short course European Championships in Herning, Denmark and instead focuses on the European Championships in Berlin, Germany set for August 2014, with his long term goal being to finally win an Olympic medal at the Games in Rio 2016. After that, he is going to retire.<\/p>\n
“I told myself, finish it in 2016. After that I will definitely hang up my suit and just stick to showering.” he said.<\/p>\n
Until now, Biedermann won 10 medals at World Championships (4 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze) and 17 medals at European Championships (11 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze) and holds world records in the 200m freestyle (long and short course) and 400m freestyle (long course).<\/p>\n
Biedermann won his last medals at short course World Championships 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey, but one of his biggest wins was the 200m freestlye at World Championships in Rome where he beat highly favored Michael Phelps by over a second and set the world record that still hasn’t been beaten to this day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
