WITH the stunning news today that not only is the College of Staten Island banned from the post-season for two years, but also lost records and performances previously put up by ineligible Dolphins from 2006 until 2012, it rang a bell in the NCAA Division III swimming community.<\/p>\n
What about the end of The Streak by Kenyon in 2011? Remember? The one that happened in Knoxville, Tenn., when Denison dethroned the Lords by just a point to end the program’s amazing 31-year run atop the standings.<\/p>\n
It really gets everyone thinking, what would have happened without Staten Island’s ineligible international swimmers?<\/p>\n
In 2011, the Dolphins scored Pavel Buyanov (100 breast, 3rd; 200 breast, 2nd), Danila Novikov (200 IM, 3rd; 400 IM, 10th), Vladislav Romanov (200 back, 15th) and Andrey Tarasov (200 breast, 10th). <\/p>\n
Although the NCAA would not name which swimmers were deemed ineligible, it did specifically highlight that the swimmers involved were international. Assuming the four scoring swimmers from 2011 have had their results stripped, it seemed like a good idea to go back and run some numbers from the 2011 NCAA Championship, where The Streak ended.<\/p>\n
If you rescore Kenyon and Denison in the events Staten Island scored in, Kenyon would have made up that one-point gap. While the NCAA states specifically that “there will be no reconfiguring of finishes for the affected teams” in its report, it’s definitely interesting to see how Staten Island’s violations impacted history. <\/p>\n
With Denison beating up on Kenyon by 81 points in 2012, there’s little doubt The Streak would have ended that year regardless of Staten Island’s influence, but it would have gone one more year to stretch the tally to 32 years straight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
