LAUSANNE, Switzerland, November 22. RECENTLY, FINA announced that Chinese diver Zhong Wei has been banned for three months following a positive test for Probenecid (Class S.5 Diuretics and Masking Agents).<\/p>\n
The test took place on May 7 as part of an out-of-competition test, and led to a three-month sanction by the Chinese Swimming Association beginning May 7. That means the ban has already been served prior to it being made public. <\/p>\n
Probenecid has a long history behind it within sports doping lore. Australian swimmer Richard Upton, who won a silver on relay duty for the Aussies in 1998 at the world championships, tested positive for the substance after being prescribed the substance by a doctor for a chest infection. <\/p>\n
Upton not only drew a three-month ban, he also lost more than $8,000 in funding and fines because of the situation. <\/p>\n
There have even been calls for Probenecid to be eliminated as a banned substance at the levels that test positive, since the amount it takes to influence performance is so much higher than that it takes to test positive, that nearly all positive tests are said to likely be accidental.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
