WUPPERTAL, Germany, November 21. SOEREN Meissner set an impressive end to the first day of German short course nationals in Wuppertal when he won the 800m freestyle in a time of 7:41.06, which is a new No. 1 time in the world and almost three seconds faster than the previous best time (7:44.07) set by Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri. In a neck to neck race, Meissner beat Florian Vogel who also remained to stay under Paltrinieri’s time and posted a 7:41,97 which is also a new age group record.<\/p>\n
In the 400m IM, several athletes posted times that were under the time set by the German swimming association DSV to qualify for the European Short Course Championships in Herning, Denmark, but German National Coach Henning Lambertz said that only the first two of each race will become part of the German team in December.<\/p>\n
On the men’s side, both Tim Wallburger and Marco Koch met the qualifying criteria. Breaststroke specialist Marco Koch who won Germany’s only medal at the World Championships 2013 on the 200m breast led the race until Wallburger went past him on the final meters and won in a time of 4:06.22 while Koch posted a 4:06.42. The third place went to Jacob Heidtmann with a time of 4:09.70 which is also below the qualifying time.<\/p>\n
The win of the women’s 400m IM went to Theresa Michalak with a time of 4:35.76. Her time was almost three seconds faster than second placed Alexandra Wenk who hit the wall at 4:38.67. Butterfly specialist Franziska Hentke who is also part of the Europen Allstars at Duel in the Pool in Scotland later this year, finished the race on the third position at 4:39.04. Both her and fourth placed Emiliy Siebrecht (4:39.12) also remained under the set qualifying time for Euros.<\/p>\n
The women’s 1500m freestyle, which isn’t part of the competition at Euros same as the men’s 800m freestyle, was won by Leonie Antonia Beck. The 16-year-old posted a time of 15:56.32 which is also a new age group record.
