Gravley also earned himself a spot in the 25K at Worlds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gregorio-paltrinieri-leads-italian-sweep-in-5k-at-nationals-grothe-gravley-qualify-for-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5K RACE RECAP<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2019-open-water-nationals-mens-5k-day-3-open-water-2019-05-05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RESULTS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brennan Gravley finished fifth behind American <strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong>, who was fourth behind the Italian contingent led by <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong>. Grothe ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-talks-giving-up-his-5k-worlds-spot-to-michael-brinegar-video-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deferred his spot<\/a> to sixth-place finisher\u00a0<strong>Michael Brinegar <\/strong>due to his already busy schedule in South Korea. Brinegar just finished his freshman year at Indiana, where he was runner-up in the 1650 at NCAA&#8217;s, and will join Gravley as a first-timer on the US roster for World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In his post-race interview with\u00a0<em>Swimming World<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Gravley talked about how the race was a real learning experience for him, describing how the Italians really &#8220;pushed the pace&#8221; and how there was more contact at the finish than he has seen from competitors in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Gravley also talked about how the Sandpipers train for open water, adding that he feels the best way to get experience with open water is to race. His Sandpipers teammate,\u00a0<strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong>, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ashley-twichell-touches-out-ana-marcela-in-5k-at-nationals-hannah-moore-qualifies-for-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">qualified for Worlds<\/a> in the 25K with her third place finish in the 10K.
