WYOMING junior Jordan Denny set a pool record in the women’s 200 back, then led her team’s 400 free relay to a win and pool record, sending the Cowgirls to a narrow 154-146 victory over Boise State that came down to the meet’s final event. Boise State’s Felicity Cann also set a pool record in the 200 free, in addition to teammate Brittany Aoyama in the 100 fly. <\/p>\n

Junior Jordan Denny’s push to finish the 400 freestyle relay helped the University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team defeat Boise State 154-146 on Saturday afternoon in Corbett Pool. Denny was the leader for the Cowgirls all afternoon, as she helped set a pool record in the 400 freestyle relay, after setting her own pool record in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n
“These girls were prepared today and it was the toughest meet I have seen in this pool,” head coach Tom Johnson said. “It was a great atmosphere in Corbett, it was just a great college dual meet.”<\/p>\n
Denny, a native of Billings, Mont., broke the Corbett Pool record in the 200 backstroke by over two seconds with a time of 2:02.14. She was also the leg of the 400 freestyle relay that broke the pool record with a time of 3:28.28. Joining her in the relay were junior Melanie McDonough, junior Claudia Carlson and sophomore Emily Ridout.<\/p>\n
“Jordan had a monster day and it was just a gritty performance by her,” Johnson said. Senior Morgan Hartigan added a pair of wins for UW. She swam a 55.62 in the 100 backstroke to open her day, a mark that ranks in the top-five in Cowgirl history. Hartigan added another win later in the meet in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.37, which gave the Cowgirls’ a late three-point advantage over the Broncos.<\/p>\n
Another big victory for the Cowgirls came in the 500 freestyle, as sophomore Emma Dow finished in first-place with a time of 5:10.47. Sophomore Keara Chang finished right behind Dow at 5:10.66, as UW earned 13 points in the race.<\/p>\n
“It was a big win for us in the 500 freestyle and both Emma and Keara swam brilliant races,” Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Other winners for the Cowgirls included sophomore Nicole Hlavacek in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:44.50, as she won by over five seconds. Junior Halie Lacey took the crown in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.08. McDonough earned a big win in the 500 freestyle with an impressive time of 23.96.<\/p>\n
In the diving events, senior Amanda Fay was Wyoming’s top finisher finishing second in the 1-meter springboard at 285.95 and third in the 3-meterspringboard at 289.73.<\/p>\n
“Boise State is a great team, but it was a great test for us and we know what we will be up against at the conference meet.”<\/p>\n
Boise State also broke a pool record in Saturday’s dual. The Bronco’s Felicity Cann swam a 1:51.83 in the 200 freestyle to earn the fastest time in Corbett Pool since 2010.<\/p>\n
The Cowgirls return to action next week with duals against New Mexico, Nevada and Grand Canyon in Albuquerque N.M., next Friday at 3:00 p.m. MT.<\/p>\n

The Boise State women’s swimming and diving team fell 154-146 at Corbett pool in Laramie, Wyo., against the Wyoming Cowgirls on Saturday. Despite holding a narrow lead, the Broncos were edged out on the last event.
\n“We knew this meet would be close and we fought hard for a win but we came up short,” said head coach Kristin Hill.”<\/p>\n
The Broncos won the 200 medley relay in the first event of the afternoon. Devin Madsen, Heather Harper, Brittany Aoyama and Katelyn Martin touched in first with a time of 1:43.41. Harper, a junior from Redmond, Wash., also captured an individual win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.25). Wyoming’s Halie Lacy took second in 2:22.78, and Chelsea Miller finished in third with 2:23.20.<\/p>\n
Freshman Brittany Aoyama easily claimed first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.59 and set a Corbett pool record. Wyoming’s Molly Coonce took second in 56.99.<\/p>\n
Felicity Cann, a freshman from Tacoma, Wash., set a pool record and claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.83. Senior Rachel Heaney grabbed first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.96.<\/p>\n
Senior diver Ciera Cortney claimed first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard, with scores of 311.78 and 317.33, respectively. Cortney’s 311.78 in the 1-meter ranks second all-time in the Bronco record books. Junior Erin Kohlbeck took second in the 3-meter with a 299.70.<\/p>\n
The final event of the afternoon was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the winner would claim the meet victory. Wyoming’s A team touched in first at 3:28.28, beating Boise State’s second place time of 3:30.37.<\/p>\n
“The meet came down to the last relay and the team that won would win the meet,” said Hill. “It was exciting and fun and our team really showed up to race. We really had quite a few step up and that was outstanding to see. Felicity’s pool record in the 200 free and Brittany’s in the 100 fly were really impressive. Competing at 7200 feet as the visiting team isn’t easy, but we did well and were really invested as a team. We don’t like finishing second but it’s great motivation to stay after our training and stay focused on being prepared every time like we were today.”<\/p>\n
The Broncos will prepare next for the University of Arizona on Nov. 22-23. The divers will compete the 22-24th at the Wildcat Diving Invitational, and the swimmers will compete on the 23rd.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
