AMERICANS Aaron Peirsol and Lindsay Benko posted top qualifying times this morning on the final day of these Short Course World Championships in Moscow.

Peirsol, 17, set a championship record in the men's 200m backstroke, clocking 1:51.81, just 19-hundredths shy of the world record of 1:51.62 held jointly by Australia's Matt Welsh and Croatia's Gordan Kozulj.

Both Welsh and Kozulj swam here this morning, and both failed to make it into the final, the Croatian swimming 1:55.87 for 11th place, the Aussie a disappointing 1:57.24 for 15th. Also failing to final was Iceland's Orn Arnarsson, the defending champion, who finished 12th at 1:56.18.

Peirsol, who set the long course world mark in this event at the USA Spring Nationals last month, will be looking to add the short course version to his collection this evening. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Peirsol.

Lindsay Benko, in the best shape of her life and having an outstanding meet, qualified first in the women's 200m freestyle at 1:57.26, splitting 57.31 and 59.95. In the 4x200m free relay, Benko led off in an American record and 2002 world-leading 1:54.91. Her sights this evening will be set on Claudia Poll's world mark of 1:54.17 set at Goteborg, Sweden, five years ago.

I'm going to go out on a limb here (though I think it's a pretty solid limb) and predict that Benko will break the world record tonight. She was set for some spectacular performances at the Long Course Worlds last summer in Japan, before a freak accident ruined her chances. Now she's ready to take her rightful place as the world's premier female middle distance swimmer. Besides, she's on the cover of this month's Swimming World. in contrast with the SI cover, that's a charm.

You read it here first, folks: Benko gets the world record tonight!

Benko will be chased by Australia's Elka Graham, second this morning in 1:57.75, and the Chinese duo of Xu Yanwei (1:57.84) and Yang Yu (1:57.93).

Australia's Giaan Rooney, who won the long course version of this event last year in Japan, will not be swimming tonight,as she placed 11th in prelims in 1:59.31. Also missing from tonight's event will be Martina Moravcova, who scratched.

In the women's 200m breaststroke, China's Qi Hui, the WR-holder, qualified first at 2:23.37 with the USA's Amanda Beard second in 2:23.85. Sweden's Emma Igelstrom, who alaready has set world records at 50 and 100 meters, is fifth at 2:24.84. Other potential medal contenders include Austria's Mirna Jukic, 15, third in 2:23.94, and South Africa's Sarah Poewe, fourth in 2:24.84.

Look for a battle between Qi and Igelstrom, with the edge going to the Chinese swimmer. Beard and Jukic probably will contend for the bronze.

In the men's 200 meter fly, Britain's James Hickman will be aiming for an unprecedented fourth straight world title. In the absence of WR-holder Thomas Rupprath of Germany, the feeling here is: he's going to do it.

Hickman qualified first in 1:54.67, three-tenths ahead of Australia's Justin Norris. Romania's Stefan gherghel, who just won the NCAA title in this event, is third at 1:55.77.

Ukraine's Denis Silantyev, probably past his prime, is fourth (1:55.81), while the USA will be represented by Tom Wilkens, fifth this morning in 1:55.86.

Conspicuously absent from this field are the US duo of Michael Pheps, long course world championa and WR-holder, and Tom malchow, the 2000 Olympic champion. Japan's Takashi Yamamoto, a likely medal contender, scratched.

The fourth, and fastest, heat of the men's 1500 meters, will be swum tonight as a timed final, with Australia's Grant Hackett heavily favored to win, despite his less than complete recovery from a nasty flu. Scrubbeed, however, will be his stated attmpt to break his own phenomenal world mark of 14:10.10.

Look, instead, for a winning time in the 14:30 range, plus or minus a few seconds. If anyone can challenge the Aussie, it will be the USA's Chris Thompson, the Olympic bronze medalist, and Erik Vendt, winner of the yards version of this event at last week's NCAA Championships.

Other possible contenders include Italy's Massi Rosolino and Christian Minotti. Minotti is the more likely to put up a tough fight, a Rosolino has seemed flat here. Probably not eating enough of those special pizzas that served him so well in Sydney.

Three swimmers broke 15 minutes in heat three of this event, swum this morning, with Russia's Yuri Prioukov leading the way at 14:50.57.

Australia qualified first in the men's 4x100m medley relay in 3:33.69. Russia was secondd in 3:33.89, with Ukraine right behind in 3:33.92.

Another second back, in fourth, was the USA. In a pleasant surprise, Mexico made it into the finals, qualifying eighth in 3:39.69, while China's 3:41.48 was only good enough for tenth. Maing its premier appearance, Mongolia entered a team and placed sixteenth.

The world record in this event is owned by Australia at 3:29.88, and it should take a sub-3:30 effort to win, with that mark probably falling. The battle should be between those great rivals, the USA and Australia, despite the fact that both teams are missing some of their biggest guns. It's a toss-up.

The US will be swimming without WR-holder Ed moses in the breaststroke and AR-holder Ian Crocker in the fly.
The Auusies will swim without Michael Klim and Ian Thorpe.

Prelim Results
HEATS
200m BREASTSTROKE WOMEN
2:19.25 QI Hui CHN 28-01-01 PARIS WR
2:20.22 TANAKA Masami JPN 02-04-99 HONG KONG CR

 50m HT LN 100m 150m R.T.
1. 2:23.37 QI Hui CHN 85 32.99 4 4 1:46.57 1:09.91 0.82 q
2. 2:23.85 BEARD Amanda USA 81 33.33 4 5 1:46.67 1:09.85 0.72 q
3. 2:23.98 JUKIC Mirna AUT 86 32.84 2 4 1:46.19 1:09.04 0.81 q
4. 2:24.82 POEWE Sarah RSA 83 32.85 3 5 1:47.03 1:09.46 0.77 q
5. 2:24.84 IGELSTROM Emma SWE 80 32.78 3 4 1:46.78 1:09.14 0.81 q
6. 2:25.01 BAKALDINA Olga RUS 85 33.49 3 3 1:47.32 1:09.84 0.90 q
7. 2:26.23 HANSON Brooke AUS 78 32.81 2 5 1:47.24 1:09.40 0.75 q
8. 2:29.80 HISSAMUTDINOVA Natalia EST 83 34.44 2 6 1:51.03 1:12.49 0.88 q
9. 2:30.31 GULBRANDSEN Anne-Mari NOR 84 34.19 2 2 1:51.00 1:12.59 0.91
10. 2:30.38 BREMOND Karine FRA 75 35.41 3 6 1:52.38 1:13.30 0.82
10. 2:30.38 CAVERLY Kristen USA 84 34.00 1 2 1:50.95 1:11.98 0.76
12. 2:31.13 KLINAR Anja SLO 88 34.79 4 2 1:51.79 1:12.93 0.79
13. 2:31.50 LIAKH Nastassia BLR 83 33.87 4 7 1:51.40 1:11.96 0.86
14. 2:31.94 SAMBRAILO Tamara SLO 86 34.21 2 7 1:51.57 1:12.35 0.73
15. 2:32.11 SAVONYUK Yuliya UKR 87 33.97 3 1 1:52.32 1:12.79 0.77
16. 2:32.20 MOURAVYEVA Marina RUS 87 34.14 2 3 1:51.36 1:12.01 0.93
17. 2:32.42 MAYSTRUK Iryna UKR 87 34.40 3 7 1:52.90 1:13.01 0.87
18. 2:34.01 DROZDOVA Simona CZE 84 34.19 4 6 1:53.62 1:13.16 0.86
19. 2:34.16 VLASAKOVA Micelle CZE 83 34.57 3 2 1:53.22 1:13.32 0.90
20. 2:35.81 JARDINE Ziaba RSA 84 35.56 4 1 1:55.51 1:15.11 0.84
21. 2:37.39 SILVA Valeria PER 85 35.51 3 8 1:55.59 1:14.95 0.93
22. 2:39.11 LIU Ka Lei HKG 85 35.52 4 8 1:56.54 1:15.04 0.85
23. 2:43.25 MORENO Katerine BOL 74 36.83 1 6 2:01.25 1:18.60 0.91
24. 2:43.61 REABUHINA Vera MDA 81 35.33 1 4 1:59.21 1:15.89 0.94
25. 2:44.85 BEJI Selma TUN 37.57 2 8 2:02.07 1:19.42 0.95
26. 2:45.69 CENNI Alessandra SMR 86 37.17 1 3 2:01.99 1:19.12 0.93
27. 2:47.03 CHEN Yi-Fan TPE 85 37.54 2 1 2:04.13 1:20.20 0.94
DQ.
