JUNEAU, Alaska, November 10. BOTH the boys and girls team titles at the Alaska State High School Swimming and Diving Championships–held at the Diamond Park Aquatic Center in Juneau Nov. 8-9–were decided by a mere three points each.<\/p>\n
The Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears, who had not won a girls trophy since 2007, squeaked by the Dimond Lynx, 88-85. Kodiak placed third (64) with Eagle River fourth (57) and Palmer fifth (51). On the boys side, the Lynx earned their fifth straight title by a score of 78-75 over the Sitka Wolves. In third place was Service (68), followed by Thunder Mountain (610 and Petersburg (56).<\/p>\n
Kodiak’s Tahna Lindquist bettered her state record from last year in the 200 IM (2:06.63) with this year’s 2:05.09 and posted a first-place time in the 500 free (4:57.29). In addition. Kodiak’s Ila Hughes (100 free, 51.32) and Dimond’s Jenny Wilcox (100 fly, 56.99) both earned a second consecutive victory. Hughes picked up a second victory in the 200 free (1:51.57).<\/p>\n
Two of the girls races were decided by 3-hundredths of a second each. Martha Hood from North Pole touched just ahead of Alex Weeks of Soldotna in the 50 free (24.16 to 24.19). In the 100 back, Ciera Kelly of Juneau Douglas finished in front of Chugiak’s Sammy Burke (57.86 to 57.89). Kelly’s teammate, Dakota Isaak, posted a 1:05.27 in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n
This year’s relay victories went to Dimond, Juneau Douglas and Palmer. Dimond’s quartet of Arianna Rohde, Kari Wray, Jenny Wilcox and Alyssa Hamilton combined for a 1:48.04 in the 200 medley relay. In a tough battle, JUneau Douglas’ Kelly, Mia Ruffin, Rielly Walsh and Isaak put together a 1:39.02-1:39.20 victory over the Kodiak team of Hughes, Illa Macinko, Brittany Home and Lindquist. Palmer grabbed the 400 free relay in 3:38.81 with the squad of Naomi Graham, Sarah Hanson, Noelle Graham and Katie Stark.<\/p>\n
The diving title went to Bartlett’s Alex Soto (353.55 points).<\/p>\n
A long-standing state record fell in the boys 500 free to Dimond’s Michael Summers. His 4:35.30 erased the 1990 mark of 4:37.85 set by Ben Smith. Summers also triumphed in the 200 free (1:42.97).<\/p>\n
Sitka’s Louis Belley repeated his victory in the 200 IM from last year with his 1:55.28, and stopped the clock first in the 100 back (52.08). Thunder Mountain’s Kenny Fox also earned a second straight title in the 100 fly (51.00).<\/p>\n
Abe Aulbach from Petersburg successfully defended his 100 free title with his 47.08. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to do that in the 50 free, falling to third place this year (22.07). Finishing ahead of him were Nathaniel Adams and E.Z. Hogue-Corwin, who gave Sitka a 1-2 punch with their 21.80 and 21.86, respectively.<\/p>\n
Tommy O’Donoghue, swimming for West Valley, was tops in the 100 breast (59.68). Kaid Brinster of Homer was the top diver, scoring 389.85 points.<\/p>\n
Belley led off Sitka’s winning 200 medley relay (1:38.25) with Justin Harang, R.J. Miller and Spencer Combs. Service’s quarter of Thomas Krasmian, Adams, Jackson Berlin and Hogue-Corwin earned the 200 free relay title in 1:27.94, and held off a very determined Sitka team of Miller, Will Pate, Combs and Belley to come out on top in the 400 free relay, 3:13.44-3:13.53.<\/p>\n
