STUART, Florida, November 9. PLENTY of colleges will want to add their names to Caeleb Dressel’s list of places to consider after his performances at the Florida Division 2 Swimming and Diving Championships today at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletic Center. Dressel, a senior at Clay High School, is still considering several universities to call home next fall.<\/p>\n
Caeleb rewrote his national public high school record leading off the Clay High School 200 free relay. His 19.29 cleared out his 19.38 mark from earlier in the season. Grady Heath, Matthew Bonna and Dakota Mahaffey followed to give Clay the first-place 1:24.26. The same four swimmers combined for a winning 3:07.36 in the 400 free relay. Dressel also collected individual triumphs with his state record-setting 1:34.39 in the 200 free and his 45.99 in the 100 fly, just shy of Joseph Schooling’s new standard set yesterday.<\/p>\n
The Blue Devils wound up with a cumulative total of 169 points, putting them in second place behind American Heritage’s 276. Suncoast took third with 139 points, just ahead of Cape Coral’s 137. Jesuit collected fifth place with 117 points.<\/p>\n
American Heritage’s individual event winner was sophomore Nicolas Medina. He battled through 500 yards of freestyle with Naples sophomore Shawn Lemarle. The two battled back and forth throughout the event, with Medina trailing after 400 yards. He pulled just ahead of Lemarle and finished 7-hundredths ahead, 4:34.05-4:34.12. Medina led off American Heritage’s winning 200 medley relay with senior Digby Nothard plus juniors Fernando Bohorquez and Taylor Eaddy (1:36.31).<\/p>\n
Stanford-bound Wesley Olmsted, finishing off his high school career at Eastside, claimed victory in both the 100 free (45.03) and 100 back (49.54). <\/p>\n
Ridgewood junior Emir Muratovic splashed his way to a 20.81 in the 50 free. Wayne Denswil, a senior at St. Brennan, completed the 200 IM in 1:52.47 for his title. Satellite’s Cameron Johnson scored 438.90 points to win the diving competition.<\/p>\n
The girls Division 2 title went to Washington, which scored 233 points. Estero claimed second (216), followed by Holy Names (206), Gulliver Prep (189) and Suncoast (171).<\/p>\n
Washington swept the relay events. Sophomore Brooke Ferrara, senior Jacquie Kinman, freshman Sophia Diagne and junior Abigail Goram combined for a 1:47.16 in the 200 medley relay. Goram and Kinman were joined by senior Brianna Mount and junior Rachel Martin in the 200 free relay (1:36.57); Ferreira, Kinman, Martin and Mount ended the meet by winning the 400 free relay (3:31.98).<\/p>\n
Tori Bindi, a sophomore at Gulf Breeze, took charge of the sprint free with her first-place 23.24 in the 50 free and 50.29 in the 100 free. Wesley Chapel freshman Abbey Duncan came from behind to take the 200 free in 1:50.82, just ahead of Gulliver Prep sophomore Niki Urquidi (1:50.99). Kaitlyn Hauser, an Estero sophomore, was tops in the 500 free (4:54.34).<\/p>\n
Two seniors from Booker are looking forward to their college careers after winning events at the championships. Bethany Leap, transferring to Texas, claimed the 100 breast with her 1:03.01. Grace Di Meo, whose next stop is North Dakota, posted a 54.99 in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n
Emma Strom, a sophomore at Choctawatchee, was first in the 100 back in 55.83. Lemon Bay junior Sophie Cattermole’s 2:00.39 earned her first place in the 200 IM. And Carol Gerhart, a senior at Stanton, put together a score of 427.95 points to come in first in diving.<\/p>\n
