Emma Weyant<\/strong>, one of the top recruits in the class of 2020, verbally committed Sunday to the University of Virginia. Weyant was the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Champion in the 400 IM (4:40.64) and also won bronze in the 800 free (8:38.88) at the meet in Fiji last summer.<\/p>\n

Weyant is also coming off a successful YMCA National Championships earlier this month where she won the 500 free (4:43.80), 200 IM (1:59.25) and 400 IM (4:07.63) at the meet in Greensboro. Weyant also led off the 200, 400 and 800 free relays for her club with splits of 24.06, 50.00 and 1:47.34 at the YMCA Nationals.<\/p>\n

Weyant was also a finalist at the US Nationals this summer with a 4:42.19 in prelims. Weyant will join the University of Virginia team in the fall of 2020 as she is currently a junior at Riverview High School and represents the Sarasota YMCA Sharks in Sarasota, Florida.<\/p>\n

Weyant will be joining a Virginia team that won the ACC title in 2018 and was second at the 2019 championships. Weyant would have been fourth at ACCs in the 400 IM and would have been an A-finalist in either the 500 or 200 IM. She would have been a B-finalist in the 400 IM at this year’s NCAAs. Virginia’s top 400 IM’er in 2019 was\u00a0Abby Richter\u00a0<\/strong>(4:11.84).<\/p>\n

Weyant will be a freshman in the fall of 2020 when All-American Paige Madden\u00a0<\/strong>will be a senior and breaststroker All-American Alexis Wenger\u00a0<\/strong>will be a junior. She also will be in the same class as Abby Harter<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Anna Keating\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Alex Walsh<\/strong><\/a> in the fall of 2020.<\/p>\n

Virginia is quickly building a strong team that could be challenging for a top 5 spot at NCAAs in a couple years. The Cavaliers have never been higher than fifth place, achieving that finish at the 2015 and 2016 NCAAs. Virginia was sixth at NCAAs in 2019.<\/p>\n

The Cavaliers sent 14 swimmers to NCAAs this year<\/a> and eight of them were underclassmen. Virginia will be welcoming a strong class this fall to Charlottesville with Ella Collins<\/strong>,\u00a0Katie Cronin<\/strong>, Lexi Cuomo<\/strong><\/a>, Maddie Donohoe<\/strong><\/a>, Kate Douglass<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Caroline Kulp<\/strong><\/a> and Ella Nelson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
