LAWRENCE, Kansas, November 2. KANSAS sent its senior class out on a winning note Saturday afternoon, sweeping Nebraska-Omaha and North Dakota in the first meet at Robinson Natatorium this season. Sophomore Chelsie Miller broke the pool record in the 400 IM in a solid day for the Jayhawks.<\/p>\n

The Kansas swimming and diving team won 13 of the 16 events, defeating Nebraska-Omaha (235-65) and North Dakota (229-70.5), on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon in Robinson Natatorium.<\/p>\n
Kansas (2-2) was led by sophomore Chelsie Miller, who broke a pool record in the 400-yard individual medley for first place with a time of 4:18.76. Another top finisher for the Jayhawks was senior Alyssa Golden, who snagged wins in both the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 218.55 and 247.95, respectively.<\/p>\n
“I am very happy with Chelsie,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “She is a product of our training in the sense that the more swimming she does, the better she gets. That was a tremendous race for her and the fastest she has ever been in the regular season. She was very aggressive. That was a good swim to set her up for the rest of the year.”<\/p>\n
North Dakota took the win over the Mavericks with a score of 201-98 and had a top finish from Courtney Funk in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.62. Natalie Renshaw took a first place finish for UNO in the 100-yard freestyle (53.37).<\/p>\n
Other first place finishers for the KU include senior Malia Johnson, in the 100-yard butterfly (58.77) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:23.18), and freshman Hannah Angell, who took wins in the 100- (57.93) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.48).<\/p>\n
“We have been swimming more and some people respond well to that,” Campbell said. “Hannah had good races today, but give her a couple more weeks and she’s going to be great. She is one freshman that has improved leaps and bounds. She came in during the summer and trained, which really benefited her. She knows more of what’s going on and I’m really happy with how she is progressing.”<\/p>\n
Overall, Campbell was pleased with how his team performed at the first home meet of the season, and expects to have a good week of training as a result.<\/p>\n
“It was a good meet,” Campbell said. “We were able to see some swimmers in events that they don’t typically have a chance to compete in. It was a good way to celebrate our seniors. We will come back on Monday and hit the pool with more training in order to prepare for Illinois. It will be our last meet before the Kansas Classic, and we want to keep the momentum going. Illinois is going to be a good challenge for us. We want to go in there, race aggressively and take the next step.”<\/p>\n
The Jayhawks will take to the road next week when they travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Fighting Illini Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
