WITH two rivals setting the bar high in two separate dual meets yesterday, North Carolina senior Stephanie Peacock set out to post the fastest time of the weekend in the 1000 freestyle during the second part of the dual meet with Louisville.

Elizabeth Beisel put up a 9:38.49 to win the 1000 free at the Florida-Georgia dual meet, then Indiana’s Lindsay Vrooman followed it with a 9:38.83 in the meet with Kentucky and Tennessee. Peacock, the NCAA record holder in the 1000 with a 9:28.92, posted a 9:38.51 today to squeeze herself between Beisel and Vrooman in the national rankings. The two have distanced themselves from the rest of the country, with Amber McDermott’s 9:44.40 ranking fourth in the nation.

Also making a play for the right to be called the fastest in the nation was Joao de Lucca of Louisville. One day after a swift 100 free that puts him second in the collegiate rankings behind teammate Caryle Blondell, the 200 free reigning NCAA champion swam a 1:36.58 in the event today. Though it’s his best time of the season by about a second, it’s not fast enough to bump Clay Youngquist’s 1:35.71 from the top of the standings. It’s the third-fastest time so far this season, behind Michael Wynalda’s 1:36.31.

Danielle Silvering of North Carolina, a rising talent in distance freestyle since a breakout meet at the NCAAs in March, had a great swim to win the women’s 200 free with a 1:47.27. That’s fast enough for fifth in the nation and just two seconds off her lifetime best of 1:45.03, which signals good things for the championship season.

These three swims were the highlights of the dual meets between the Louisville and North Carolina men’s and women’s teams. After the first day of competition, the North Carolina women were ahead, 100-67, while the Tar Heels men’s team had a two-point lead over Louisville with a score of 83-81.

With plenty of wins on the women’s side today, North Carolina easily defeated Louisville (score). The UNC men’s team gained more ground over Louisville on the second day, winning with a score of (score).

Other notable swims of the day included a 48.42 by UNC’s Dominick Glavich to win the 100 fly by three tenths over teammate Sam Lewis and a 48.47 in the 100 back by North Carolina’s Nic Graesser.

Click the link below for complete results from the second day of competition.

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, November 2.
