PALO ALTO, California, November 2. THE month of “Movember” has officially begun around the world, with millions of men eschewing the razor in November and growing mustaches to raise awareness of cancers that afflict men, particularly prostate cancer.<\/p>\n
Now in its ninth year, the Movember movement has raised about $300 million worldwide to help fund various men’s health foundations, such as Livestrong. The movement continues to take hold of the general population, with 3 million men taking part in the charity in some way.<\/p>\n
College swim teams in the United States are doing their part, starting fundraising pages on the official Movember USA page that has garnered thousands of dollars in donations in just a few days. So far, SwimAtlanta is the only USA Swimming team to create a Movember page.<\/p>\n
The Stanford men’s swim team leads with the most donations and the most team members, earning $1,793. Twenty-five men are registered members of the Stanford Swimming page, including current athletes David Nolan, Tom Kremer and Danny Thomson. A few postgrads are on the list, particularly Aaron Wayne and David Dunford. Assistant coach Scott Armstrong is part of the Movember team, which is being led by captain Payne Montgomery. Montgomery completed his collegiate eligibility last season with a 16th-place finish in the 200 fly at the NCAA championships.<\/p>\n
Other top college teams include the University of Southern California and the University of Kentucky. So far, USC has collected just $50, while Kentucky has yet to bring in donations.<\/p>\n
