﻿{"id":364953,"date":"2019-04-16T19:36:30","date_gmt":"2019-04-17T02:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=364953"},"modified":"2019-06-07T15:58:08","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T22:58:08","slug":"zac-dell-qualifies-for-world-junior-championships-after-new-zealand-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zac-dell-qualifies-for-world-junior-championships-after-new-zealand-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Zac Dell Qualifies for World Junior Championships After New Zealand Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first day of the 2019 Aon National Age Group Championships kicked off with <strong>Zac Dell<\/strong> (Pukekohe) posting qualifying times for the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships and the 2019 World University Games in winning the boys 17-18 years 100m backstroke in 55.63s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/NAGS160419-064.jpg\" alt=\"Zac Dell 17-18 Years 100m Backstroke \" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2019-new-zealand-age-group-nationals-day-1-day-1-international-elite-2019-04-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAY ONE RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Watkins<\/strong> (Capital) finished 0.01s behind Dell in 55.64s, also under the 2019 World University Games qualification time. <strong>Luan Grobbelaar <\/strong>took third place in 58.40s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was really happy with that, I knew it was going to be a tough race and it takes the pressure off for the rest of the week,&#8221; Dell said in his post-race interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong> was also in record breaking form setting a new girl&#8217;s 15 years 100m freestyle National Age Group record with a time of 55.60s in the evening finals.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 Youth Olympics representative also achieved the qualifying time for the 2019 FINA Junior World Championships and broke the previous NZ record of 55.98s held by <strong>Laticia-Leigh Transom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/NAGS160419-047.jpg\" alt=\"Erika Fairweather \" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bree Middleton<\/strong> (Ashburton) finished second in 58.65s with <strong>Aimee Crosbie<\/strong> (United) taking third in 58.99s.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brearna Crawford<\/strong> (MAGS) added the girls 16 years 50m breaststroke National Age Group record to the huge array of records she already holds.<\/p>\n<p>Crawford won the final in 32.23s and took the title from <strong>Ciara Smith<\/strong> and <strong>Annabelle Carey<\/strong> who broke the record in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/NAGS160419-055.jpg\" alt=\"Brearna Crawford\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bree Anderson<\/strong> (Nelson South) took second with a time of 34.36s and <strong>MacKenzie Brears<\/strong> (United) followed third with a time of 35.19s.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Gray<\/strong> (North Shore) broke the boys 15 years 100m backstroke National Age Group record in the final with a time of 57.71s, eclipsing the previous record (58.05s) held by <strong>Corey Main<\/strong> from 2010.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/swimming.org.nz\/visageimages\/NAGS160419-061.jpg\" alt=\"Cameron Gray\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taiko Torepe-Ormsby<\/strong> (Wharenui) also went under the previous record, finishing second with a time of \u00a057.81s with <strong>Tarquin Magner<\/strong> (Evolution) third in 58.98s.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the morning heats <strong>Lea Muellner<\/strong> (Raumati Raptors), also set a National Age Group record in the girls 15 years 50m breaststroke with a time of 32.51.
